Honokiol & Mulungu extract

i quite like this stuff, mellow, no real euphoria but reduces anxiety and relaxing

its good for the liver and as i have a huge enzyme level in my liver this stuff seems ideal

^there are alkaloidal extracts available, would that be enough to warrant it suspicious enough? i'm not too learned in the AQIS guidelinies

static, any update as yet?

Not surprised that neither Mulungu nor Honokiol shows up in the AQIS ICON database, but I am surprised that Magnolia grandifloris presents no search results. This is the best database online to query from, it's always being updated.

Wouldn't hurt to flick them an email on the email us section in the website :)

Honokiol Insufflation

Well... someone had to be the guinea pig and after much searching I couldn't find any reports of anyone snorting honokiol. Verdict: honokiol insufflation hurts. I broke out a line that I'd say was about 50mg of 98% purity honokiol alkaloidal extract. My hunch was that even if it felt like warm summer rain, it still probably wouldn't do much, seeing as the active anxiolytic dose seems to be around 500mg for most people. I also know that the water solubility of alkaloids in general is pretty poor. Though I've heard people argue that there isn't always a direct correlation between water solubility and intranasal effectiveness as an ROA. I haven't been able to find good data on the oral bioavailibility of honokiol, so I figured, what the hell, maybe it's like methylphenidate and the nasal bioavailibility is 3x that of oral. The experiment was for anxiolysis. I realize that honokiol has limited recreational value. That's part of what interests me. It's effective, it's an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, so unlike benzos, it could actually improve rather than degrade your cognitive functioning and memory. And I remember reading papers and abstracts suggesting that it has an almost reverse addiction withdrawal action in rats. When cut off from the honokiol after a week or so of daily administration, the anxiolytic effects slowly faded over the ensuing days, causing no rebound anxiety. And the study was done in tandem with diazepam administered mice which had shown classic withdrawal symptoms. I don't feel like searching citations right now, but this stuff is fascinating. Oh, and I remember reading somewhere that it can increase expression of GABA receptors, effectively up-regulating GABA response. That last point I'm not 100% solid on though. Yeah old thread, but more research needs to be done on this compund and the price for the 98% purity stuff needs to drop hehe.

^ An acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, eh? That's interesting, I wonder how effective it is at this? Definitely something to avoid if you have glaucoma.

Ok, so I found an academic paper published by a researcher who has published quite a few papers on honokiol and its psychopharmacology. This exert clipped from the the conclusion, kind of backs up my last statement, though it doesn't specifically mention GABA neurite growth.

In conclusion, we have found that honokiol (1), a simple biphenyl lignan, isolated from the bark of medicinal plant Magnolia species, can effect significantly neurite extension as well as neuronal survival in the primary cultures of rat cortical neurons. Honokiol appears to exert neurotrophic effects on neuronal cells and to affect neurite outgrowth. Although honokiol has been known to exhibit a numberof biological activities related to CNS, 6 there is no report on neurotrophic activity of honokiol. Honokiol shows an anxiolytic-like activity in vivo, 18 and recently GABAA receptor was reported to be involved in this activity mediated by honokiol. 19 In addition, activation of GABAA receptor by the treat- ment of honokiol plays an important role in a variety of CNS related activities, 20 and thus trophic actions induced by honokiol are presumably closely related to GABAA receptors. Our studies along this line are now under way to clarify neurotrophic effects of honokiol.

I don't know why I'm posting this stuff under the ADD, seeing as I'm a Yankee, but this thread seemed to be the most straight forward on the subject. I'm just someone who is very interested in this subject, as I deal with co-morbid ADHD and Generalized Anxiety. And I mean anxiety about every little thing in my life. I'm currently medicated with benzos and stims, but of course benzos don't help with concentration/motivation and amphetamine/methylphenidate doesn't help with my anxiety. Anyway, this stims I'm not too worried about as they don't seem to be that habit forming for me personally, I just don't really like being on them. However, the idea of being on 3mg clonazepam/day and for some reason suddenly being cut off is kinda scary considering the life threatening implications. Plus, just knowing that it would take a good year to wean off of them without a lot of pain is depressing.

TL;DR- Honokiol is interesting and it or related compounds may be a much improved benzo replacement. Don't snort it. I'm not Australian. =D

Mr. Blonde, you described earlier a confused state of mind after taking 3 heaping teaspoons of the stuff, which at least with the material I've been dealing with would be ~3-4g. Maybe there was some overcholination going on, having something to do with the AChEI effects. That mixed with the GABAergic modulation maybe? Then again, it seems pretty hard to overcholinate one's self. I know in the US at least some large majority of people are choline deficient, I have no idea about AUS.

^ That was with mulungu though, which as far as I'm aware does not have any activity on acetylcholine? It felt like drinking too much too quickly really, wasn't a pleasant sensation.

Thanks for that abstract, interesting stuff there. I haven't gotten around to trying honokiol but maybe I should order some.

I've been enjoying an extract quite a bit. I found it to be somewhat recreational. About 200-300mg smoked provides a very light euphoria lasting about an hour and a half. It seemed to have an accumulative sloping effect for the first two-three days. Toward the middle of the second day, about 80mg would provide a a level similar to initiation. After the third day, I found a plateau where the light head lift had shed away significantly, and I am left with a simple relaxed state even with a 500mg administration.
I am not so much of the thought that this plateau signifies a potential for addiction. I am prone to think that there is an acclimation and I've reached a leveling off.

Oh, and I frogot to mention: the MSDS for magnolol reads darkly, and classifies it as dangerous, this and that that I don't recall sleepily. I'll try to remember to place a post.

im interested in hearing more about smoking the extract. how did you smoke it?
