Hello all..Just started smoking. I was always against it but I figured what the f i'll

try it on spring break (20y/o college student). My boy chris said if you hold in the

smoke and try to keep inhaling youll get higher, is that tru? he also said I might
not be getting high cuz im doing it wrong, cuz i also never smoked a cig be4 so

its all new to me.

as opposed to not? Call it placebo, or not...., but yeah, I'd say 'higher'. At least, that's what I recall being true this past week on a handful of occasions.

What do you use?

We used a small cone water pipe with a little glass bowl and I don't know anything about the quality of bud yet but it smelled reallly strong i guess what people call skunk

Someone told me once that holding in your hit longer will not make you any higher.... He said something like all it does is hurt your lung tissue and make you cough.....

I disagree however because it seems to me if you hold your hit in longer, it gives the THC more of a chance to be absorbed.... Also it may make you cough but hell every time I have a coughing fit during a smoke session, I almost always feel just a little bit higher.

Call it placebo if you want either way I think i'm gettin HIIIIIGHAAAAA lol

I've always heard (and I'm pretty sure it's true) that after 5 seconds you're not absorbing any significant amount of THC. The 'rush' you feel for holding it in longer is just your body's natural response to a lack of oxygen, and the effect is temporary. Over the course of a session, though, it won't matter if you've held your hits in for 5 seconds or 20 seconds.

Inhaling oxygen after each hit makes you higher, since the ALL the smoke goes into your lungs when you do so. Also, make sure you don't keep all the smoke in your mouth because if you do so you won't get high.

Holding your hits in for more than 5 seconds will definitively give you the impression you're higher, but I've heard a lot of persons saying it don't get you higher. I suggest you hold you hits for about 5 seconds and inhale them deeply into your lungs unless you have a low amount of bud then maybe hold them for about 10 seconds.

From what I've read, something like 90% of the good stuff gets absorbed by your lungs within one second, and you only get a tiny bit more THC into your body by holding it in for a long ass time. I know for a fact that you get a LOT more tar and other nasty shit in your lungs the longer you hold it in.

As for smoking it right, there are two big mistakes newbie smokers tend to make:

1. Not actually inhaling it into their lungs. If you just puff it into your mouth and then exhale, you're wasting it compeletely.

2. Inhaling it directly and coughing it up right away because it's so hot.

What you want to do is puff it into your mouth without actually breathing it down your throat (it's kind of like a sucking action, you use your mouth to suck it in, not your throat/lungs). Then, you take breathe in through your mouth, so all that smoke in your mouth goes into your lungs. It cools down a LOT just sitting in your mouth for a second, so it's muuuuuch easier to take a big hit without coughing it up. That's how you should smoke a dry pipe, joint or blunt. If you're smoking a bubbler or bong, anything where the smoke goes through water before you inhale it, you just suck it straight into your lungs.

If you're doing it wrong, when you exhale, the smoke will immediately come out in one big plume right away, and then basically no more smoke will come out. If you're doing it right, it'll be more of a steady stream as you empty your lungs. If you always make the habit of breathing in a little air through your mouth at the end, that should pretty much guarantee you do it right.

You know you do it right when you inhale the smoke...cough out the smoke....breathe in....and cough out even more smoke....

hahaha nah, you only need to keep it in 1-3 seconds...usually less if you are smoking a spliff or blunt

+1

If you don't cough you don't get off!

And as for the holding it, imo, you get more stoned if you hold it in. Sometimes I hold it in so long that when you exhale nothing even comes out!

Try taking the first puff you take in as deep as you can and for as long as you can and start doing something else like playing playstation or browsing, half the time you find you get so blazed off the first chuff for about half an hour you forget you got the whole rest of the joint left in the ashtray front of you! amazing haha

just take big hits. and use a good bit of weed.

and yes holding it in does get you higher.
when you take a toke some of the smoke gets taken up by the bloodstream, but not all of it. if you hold it in, it goves you lungs more time to take up all the smoke. its basically a more efficient way of getting stoned :P

Inhale quick, hold for 2-3 seconds, exhale slowly.

Don't worry about specific time periods. It isn't rocket science.

everyone says only a couple seconds. thats a waste. might not be as healthy for your lungs but hell, youre smoking already

plus if you hold hits for as long as you can, you have to take less hits to get high.

proof you say? well i can hold in a hit for a good 10 seconds, blow it into my girls mouth and she gets baked after doing it 2 or 3 times. so clearly still good ol THC and/or CBD after 10 seconds even.

Don't quote me on this but I'm pretty sure you feel higher after coughing a lot due to the lack of oxygen to the brain

If you try breathing in and out really fast chances are you'll start feeling lightheaded

Have you got a source please? Honestly, this topic comes up often, and people claim various rates of absorption, but I've never seen any literature to back it up.

IME, you get more stoned if you hold the smoke down as you would with a cig rather than exhaling immediately, and you get higher still if you hold it down for as long as you can. YMMV.

Abstract
The present study examined the effects of systematic manipulation of breathhold duration (0 and 20 s) on the physiological and subjective response to active (M; 2.3% delta-9-THC) and placebo (P; 0.0% delta-9-THC) marijuana in a group of ten regular marijuana smokers. During the eight-session experiment, subjects were exposed twice to each of four experimental conditions (P0, P20, M0, M20), scheduled according to a randomized block design. A controlled smoking procedure was used in which the number of puffs and puff volume were held constant. Expired-air carbon monoxide (CO) levels were used to monitor smoke intake. Breathhold duration affected CO absorption; significantly more CO was absorbed from both P and M smoke after 20 s of breathholding (mean CO boost=6.9 ppm) than after no breathholding (mean=4.4 ppm). Heart rate was minimally affected by the breathhold manipulation. Effects of marijuana on mood were not consistently affected by breathhold duration. The results confirm previous findings that prolonged breathholding does not substantially enhance the effects of inhaled marijuana smoke.

^Thank you very much. It would be nice if we could get more data though; I think everyone knew that 0 seconds is insufficient and that 20s is ample. I'd like to see a study comparing breath-holding for 2s, 5s, 10s and peak plasma levels of THC.

I have experimented with holding in hits, i find that aslong as you hold it in for around 4/5 secs you are getting as much THC as you are gona get. Ovy if you only have a small amount of weed the natural thing to do is hold in hits for aslong as you can, im sure everyone has done that. haha

I've heard it takes 8 seconds for all the THC to get in there, but 4-5 seconds is probably a good compromise between getting higher and not hurting your lungs too much.
