More young people are likely to die from inhaling laughing gas following an ‘explosion’ in its use as a legal high, a doctor has warned.
Nitrous oxide, also known as ‘hippy crack’, has been blamed for 17 deaths in this country in recent years.

Raheem Sterling, the Liverpool and England footballer, was recently captured on video inhaling laughing gas, and researchers have warned that paediatricians and the public need to be more aware of the dangers.

Dr Paul Seddon, respiratory consultant and neonatal paediatrician at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton said nitrous oxide, which is usually inhaled through balloons, poses a significant risk to teenagers.

He carried out the research after treating a teenager suffering from an unexplained pneumothorax – sudden sharp chest pain followed by painful breathing. The cause was unknown until the patient admitted she had inhaled laughing gas at a festival.

Abusing nitrous oxide can lead to oxygen deprivation resulting in loss of blood pressure, fainting and even heart attacks. It is thought that many youngsters will have suffered similar problems after trying it out.

Dr Seddon’s study found that 7.6 per cent of 16- to 24-year-olds in England and Wales have admitted to having tried balloons, which he described as ‘widely available’ in shops that sell legal highs.

‘There’s evidence that its use has mushroomed over the past few years,’ he said.

‘What’s little-known is that long-term use can result in all sorts of severe complications, such as causing problems to the nervous system.’ The gas is legitimately used for pain relief in dental procedures and labour, in engines to make them perform better and in aerosol cans to prevent food going off and to make whipped cream.

‘Clearly the shops that sell legal highs are not selling it for use in confectionery,’ Dr Seddon added.

‘It is something of a grey area, but there has certainly been an explosion in recreational use and is something that both paediatrics and the general public need to be aware of.’

His study, which is due to be presented at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health’s annual conference this week, stated: ‘Seventeen deaths in the UK were attributable to nitrous oxide between 2006-2012, a figure which we would expect to rise given the current surge in usage.

‘Pneumothorax should be considered in any teenager presenting after inhaling gaseous or volatile agents, and recreational drug use should be considered and addressed in teenagers presenting with a pneumothorax of unknown [cause].’

Although it is not illegal to be in possession of the gas, it is prohibited from being sold in England and Wales to under-18s if there is a risk they will inhale it.

A Home Office campaign last year on the risks of legal highs showed that laughing gas was the second most popular drug among young adults in 2013/14 after cannabis, being more widely used than cocaine and ecstasy.

Research by the Local Government Association has described as ‘deeply disturbing’ the notion that many young people view nitrous oxide as safe, despite it being linked to a number of deaths.

Among those to have died was 17-year-old London sixthformer Joseph Benett, who suffered a cardiac arrest after taking the drug in 2012.

Given the data presented in the story, the headline should read: "Nitrous oxide use found to be incredibly safe."

I really wish the article was about mushrooms. That would have been a good laugh.

Ahh good old n2o, had many fun times at this warehouse dnb party that used to go every weekend where they had like a 4 foot tank and huuuge balloons 2 for 5.I losty shot a few times hitting the balloon while all kd or coked up. Hit it once on mishroo.s and my hearing was wonky for like 30 mins lol, usually its only like 20 seconds, but nos is def fun lol

Indeed nitrous is very safe as long as you do it correctly. I'd say it's more safe than Amyl/Poppers are; but I've never used poppers/Amyl, don't want to, and I just used n2o a few times once at an oral surgeon when having teeth pulled, and a few times with food grade n2o on it's own, while stoned on cannabis, and once while on mushrooms after I smoked some herb.

But I have met some people who told me how they had access to a tank and inhaled a lot directly from it without breathing air, and another guy I know told me how when he used it he would inhale it from trash bags and not whip-its, balloons, or a whipped cream can and you do run the risk of dying if you inhale a lot at once and don't get any air.

Someone else I know would binge on whip-its and their B-vitamin levels were depleted; but they very quickly ate food that is rich in B-Vitamins and took supplements/vitamins.

Plus I've been at tons of concerts where they open up a tank or multiple tanks, people line up and buy balloons, some people do them standing up and fall on their ass.

why is that jackass guy 1) risking his lungs by directly inhaling 2) wasting gas buy not reinhaling it a few times from a baloon ?

also why so many more deaths from alcohol in the given period of time makes alcohol acceptable and the small number from nitrous(which probably was caused from stupid behaviour like the one in the ass video) makes it some sort of plauge ?

~80,000 mostly younger adults die from alcohol poisoning each year in the U.S.

But I suppose that letting the public know about this at American venues such as Coors Field would be awkward as well as financially inconvenient.

Fuck the mainstream media.

wow, I guess if it's almost as popular as cannabis, & it's also used safely & widely in medicine, & it's not illegal to possess, Nitrous Oxide must truly pose a worryingly large problem for prohibitionists & the rabid right wing media. The only way to get any story out of Nitrous is to call it "Hippy-fucking-Crack". What absolute cobblers!

People do stupid things & they get hurt, killed. People die from using Nitrous stupidly but people die from using the roads all the time & they don't even need to do anything stupid. I don't see anybody freaking out about it! 1700 chidlren under 18 really are killed on Britains roads every year. Roads should be banned. When did you hear of drugs killing 1700 kids in one year? Tell me when that EVER happened...

Glastonbury music festival organisers plead with revellers to leave the laughing gas at home

IT is a drug more popular than cocaine and ecstasy and deemed so dangerous that organisers of one of the world’s biggest music festivals wrote an open letter urging punters to steer clear of it.

It goes by the street names “nangers”, “nangs”, “whippets” and “hippie crack” but you might know it simply as laughing gas.

That’s right, the stuff dentists use to sedate their patients is being inhaled in such a quantity that the Glastonbury music festival banned it this year.

But how bad is it? A serious health risk or a lot of hot air?

Drug experts have taken a harder line on laughing gas — or nitrous oxide — in the UK where it has gained popularity. Britons use it for a legal high at nightclubs, parties and music festivals because it’s “dirt cheap” and believed to be relatively safe.

But 17 people are believed to have died after inhaling laughing gas in the UK alone. Young chef Jordan Guise died in France in February last year after experimenting with the drug.

Closer to home, Jessica Murray, 23, and Tolson Dimovski, 38, died 10 years earlier after experimenting with laughing gas in a vehicle in Sydney.
