Highest Alc/vol % available in Australia?

Hi,
I'm making some green dragon at home, and I need a very high alcohol/volume spirit. Ideally, I'm supposed to use Everclear, but I haven't seen it anywhere in Australia. It's 95% alc/vol. I've also been told I can use pure ethanol, but I can't find anywhere that will sell that either.

Anyway, I'm in Sydney, and I need to find the highest % alc/volume spirit available to make green dragon. If not Everclear, is there a substitute product? Anything higher than 151 proof I spose will suffice.

Thanks.

I've heard Vodka works.

I just Googled 'vodka green dragon' and it came up with a fair few hits (the first one was a Vodka Green Dragon reciepe), but I think a few of them are using Green Chartruese as well.

Actually, I just realised, Green Chartruese is probably up there in the top-end of legal Australian alcohols. It's 110 proof from memory.

Did you use the search on BL?

yeah I was gonna try Bacardi 151... I didn't know if it would be high enough, but I think it shall suffice.

In regards to the 95% ethanol in Chinese grocery stores, do I just go in and ask for 95% ethanol? I mean, most Chinese grocery store proprietors don't usually have the best English skills (not being racist, merely stating my experiences), so is there a particular product I should ask for?

I dunno about in australia but ive heard of straw rum being around 80, 'absinthe' (not actual absinthe but a brand name) being 80 percent and schnapps (unflavoured plain) at 72 percent

Green dragon is absinth. You can buy it in QLD. You can also buy wormwood and absinth extract and according to the vial it recommends Vodka

Ummm no its not.

If you look hard enough, you should be able to find a bottle shop that sells Spiritus. There may be more than one variety but the one we always used to drink has a green label and is exactly 95% alcohol and thus is the closest thing to Everclear I'm aware of in this country.

We used to drink it a fair bit in Canberra in 2002, but last time I looked for it our bottle shop stopped stocking it. If you ask the store-owner they should be able to order it in.

Hmmm well if you Know some italians.. maybe you could get some Grappa

Now thats some strong Shit.. probs wouldn't be the stuff to use... and i guess ya gotta know sum pplz to get the shit !

Peace Out

Like Black Octagon said Sprytus is the way to go but its not cheap, around %50 for 0.5L. I've seen it in Dan Murphy's in a clear bottle with all the other high proof alcohols.

Im in no way recommending you do this but in the past i have had *knowledgable* friends who have used methylated spirits. The boiling points of the posion is less than that of ethanol, so you evaporate it leaving you with 97% alcohol or there abouts. I strongly suggest you do not try this, just stating my past experience.

^^ They would want to be mighty careful. From what I understand the procedure isn't exactly straight forward. Methylated spirit contains; methanol present at ~2-3%, which, like ethanol (at ~90%) forms an azeotrope with water (present at 0-10%). There's also methyl isobutyl ketone at ~0.1% and Denatonium Benzoate at ~0.01%. The latter is one of the most bitter tasting substances known. A dye is also often added.

Do your friends extract the MIBK with NaOH, before distilling with 2 fractionating columns, each with a variable temp water supply? And do they monitor temperature throughout the distillation, and ensure the final product is free of methanol? Simply discarding the first few mLs that comes over - by it's itself - is no guarantee. The Denatonium Benzoate has a melting point of 166-170 degC. So, if it doesn't carry over, it should be left as a deposit in the boiling flask.

I'd be very sus on drinking anything that's reportedly made from methylated spirit. If purifying the ethanol was easy to do, it would be done more often IMO, as the market is huge.

[edit] If you want ethanol at 95% then inquire at a chemical supplier. It's not sus to buy, however, unless you have an exemption you'll have to pay the excise which is several times the cost of the ethanol alone.

Funnily enough I bought a bottle of this just two nights ago. Only it has a white label with green writing. Gotta love the Polish hey. You should be able to buy it in one of the better liquor stores around.

Jesus Christ what a mouthful. I never consumed any, basically because i thought it was sus too. Have they changed the contents in the last 5 or so years because this was around 10 years ago that i saw them doing it? I noticed no ill effects, however i dont see them anymore so who knows.

I work in a bottleshop. Your best bet is sprytus, which is sold where i work. as said before is a 95% alcohol. as said before no cheap, ** bucks 4 half a litre. Its not that hard to find but you have to look around.

[edit] no prices please
