I had surgery in february to correct a herniated disc and I thought it was over. However, I had to go to the ER the other day for my mid back and they ran an CT scan and my entire thoracic region is degenerating at a rate the doctor has never seen in a person under 50 years old. And I am only half that. I was told to follow up with my PCP; whom I see monday, and he wrote on my discharge papers that he recommends I be prescribed "4-8mg Dilaudid Q3-6 PO PRN or 30mg oxycodone q4-6h PO PRN" If i do end up with a choice, which should I go with for better pain relief? My only experience with dils is shooting in the past, but now I just want relief. I do know that the oral BA of hydromorphone is rather low compared to oxycodone. So I was wondering if someone out there had experience with PROPERLY taking these medications and how they helped with pain. Any advice is welcome. They had to give me three mg IV hydromorphone in the ER to stop the pain just so i could obtain a CT scan. So what would you recommend for pain? Dilaudid? or Oxycodone?
