High Times is bringing its Cannabis Cup competition for recreational marijuana to Denver April 20-21, the first time the event has been held in the United States. For the past 25 years, it’s taken place in pot-friendly Amsterdam, where coffee shop owners and seed manufacturers compete for the title of Best Bud in The Netherlands.

But Colorado is now more liberal about marijuana than even Amsterdam — where it’s illegal to grow pot in the Netherlands, it’s a constitutional right in Colorado. With the passage of Amendment 64 in November, adults 21 and older can possess up to an ounce of pot, grow a limited number of plants and smoke weed with virtual impunity, as long as it’s in private.

Although a system for buying and selling recreational marijuana is still being worked out by a special task force that will offer recommendations to lawmakers next month, a smattering of bring-your-own pot clubs have sprouted up around the state.

But since there are no legally recognized recreational growers yet, strains entered in the Cannabis Cup will come from Colorado’s robust medical marijuana industry, said Bobby Black, a senior editor at High Times.

“Being that there isn’t really a system in place yet for sales, we’re sticking with the models that work,” he said.

High Times has run a medical-strain competition here for the past three years. The only real difference for this year’s event is that anyone 21 and older can attend and smoke. Previously, only qualified medical patients could sample the entries.

interesting to think that the place where pot is most legal is in the country whose government made so many other nations demonize it

the two times i drove cross country (bmore to LA) Colorado was my fav place on both the trips. nothing beats laying out at night high in the rockies at looking at all the stars. never seen so many in my life. I think i saw a satelite too.

If people think the feds wont bring the hammer down on that they are crazy. I would not willingly go to the cannabis cup in the US right now...

this will definately be seen as taunting the feds

but if this thing does bring in thousands or tens of thousands of people i dont really see the feds arresting that many people on marijuana charges

it will be seen as disrespect to states rights (probably not a huge concern for the feds but still) but more so to use all that federal money to go to one place simply to arrest a bunch of marijuana smokers will be seen as a waste of time, money and outright intrusion

i dunno i get what you're saying, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out but i see the feds coming in ahead of time threatening to arrest any who are in charge of putting the event together (under what charge who knows) and doing things along those lines, i really just dont see them making 1000+ arrests for simple possession

I would bet most of the Americans who go on pot tourism trips to Amsterdam would rather go somewhere in America. Also if you like great outdoors CO or WA states are perfect places for hiking, biking, camping, fishing, no way can amsterdam compete. I give amsterdam the edge on art galleries and fat hookers. I love amsterdam, dont get me wrong but no US customs on way back home either, thats just awesome. I think Cannabis cup is going to be in america for a long time.

yeah i'd definitely travel to CO or WA over amsterdam, just for cost purposes. Though the culture and museums of amsterdam is something in itself to see (i haven't been there but my dad has many times). I bet WA and CO's tourism industries are about to explode, I would move to WA, if only the US didnt have such strict drug laws against everything else. No OTC codeine or 2c-s? or cathinones? and the analog act? fuck that. Definitely interested to see how this plays out, will probably happen without too much fuss or trouble IMO.

^ With weed legal in 2 states in the US, quality will improve until they become the best in the world.
California already has Amsterdam-level quality weed, if not better, and WA and CO promise to surpass that.
I know that weed is virtually legal in BC, but I still wonder how well Canada really competes...

our top quality bud is just as good as anywhere else, and while it fetches a premium, it isn't retarded like in cali or nyc.
