Hello Bluelight! I am a long time lurker that decided to sign up after reading a thread I felt compelled to reply to. The topics on this forum are engaging and I have a great deal of respect for this site's harm reduction ideals.

A little background. I have been a Deputy Sheriff in Ohio (USA) for nearly 13 years as of this month. I am married to a wonderful girl (02/2002!) and we have three great kids together.

My background in "drugs" may be a little more difficult to explain. I was hit by a car while on duty, and prescribed oxycodone following some fairly minor surgery (considering the speed of the impact, I was very lucky to have sustained no serious injuries). I quickly developed an addiction to this medication, and am (still now) on methadone (MMT). At my methadone clinic, I've met a lot of people who feel police officers are some how above drug addiction and drug use and this simply is not the case.

I really hope I can learn from the membership of this website, and that you'll give me a chance to get to know you, as a fellow human being...as a person truly committed to reducing unnecessary deaths through education, understanding and tolerance.

I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to read & reply.

Pete

Hello Pete, welcome!!
Sorry to hear about your back, is your back fixed up now and taking methadone to get off the oxy?

Thanks for the welcome :)

I am addicted to opioid pain killers which is why I started MMT. Terrible as it sounds, I was supporting a 200$+ daily habit on less than 30k a year. MMT has truly changed my life. Especially my outlook on life. It helps (especially working in law enforcement) to know both sides of the story. I feel it helps me treat other drug addicts fairly. I just remember how I felt about it at first, and how my perceptions have changed relating to drugs and addiction. I was from the school of "throw them asshole druggies in the clink." whereas now I recognize that it is a legitimate medical condition. I think the cure to a lot of the ignorance drug addicts (OK - and users too) face from LEOs is the simple fact that they haven't received any specialized training in the area.

Thanks again for the welcome pal =D

Welcome Pete.

I'm sorry for what you're going through and I'm glad you're taking the right steps to end your addiction.

Are you informed however that methadone withdrawal is significantly worse than that of other opioids? If you're planning on using maintenance drugs I would recommend suboxone instead of methadone.
