The Stone Roses were pretty groundbreaking I'd argue. His solo stuff is completely different from what everyone else is putting out and every single album has a completely new and fairly unique sound. He can sing fine, he's not supposed to sound like an angel though, it just wouldn't work. His voice is perfect for the music.

He's from Warrington, he gets kudos for suffering that, I only managed 3 months of living and working there before I had enough! I can remember being excited and buying the My Star single when I was 18, 12 year ago now, fucking hell man!
