Hey everyone,

I've been a long-time lurker of this site, but got most all of the info I needed from the forums. I've had chronic pain for about 18 years now, and as my grandma would say, "the squeaky wheel gets the grease". I shouted, screamed and pleaded with numerous doctors to help me, and finally found a good doctor to treat me, for the past 13 years. For the last 6 years, I was on a very high dose of MS Contin (520 mg. per day!) But, like all good opiates, I was becoming tolerant to its effects. My pain doctor, who is also an 'addiction specialist', didn't want to increase my dose, and suggested that I try the new Butrans (buprenorphine) patch, with the Suboxone strips (8/2 mg.) to supplement the patch.

Coming off the MS Contin was sheer hell, but soon I was on the strips and patch and the pain control was amazing. The brain-fog lifted, along with my depression and I started devouring books again... something that I just couldn't do on the MSC. We found the perfect combo that worked for me, which was the 10 mcg. patch (every 7 days) and 1-8 mg. sublinqual strip (per day). After being on this dose for only 3 months, I started having horrific side effects: profuse sweating, the underside of my tongue became raw and inflammed, my throat hurt and my glands were swollen, I was either nauseous or my stomach was cramping, I woke up daily with a headache, and the sites wherever I placed the patch would itch and burn like crazy.

I actually went back to see him the other day, in tears. I didn't know what to do. I loved the pain control and the clear-headedness that the Bupe offerred, but I couldn't keep living with all of these side effects. I was miserable. He suggested that I go on Methadone, but I had to remind him that his partner had taken me off of that horrible drug, long ago, after being on it for 10 months and gaining 60 lbs.! Then he suggested the Fentanyl patch, at 50 mcg. I was on Fentanyl (100 mcg.) a long, long time ago ~ before I found my current Doc, but the doctor who prescribed it was retiring, and no one was willing to continue prescribing it for me. All I remember is how fucked-up I was on that drug! I took my last Bupe strip on Thursday, and today is Saturday. My pain is coming back in full force, and I hurt all over. I know the Bupe must be wearing off if the pain is back, but I don't think the Fentanyl is helping at all. Do you think I just need to be more patient as far as the Bupe goes, or is it possible that my Fentanyl dose needs to be titrated upwards? I'm just a little frightened because once my pain gets outta control, it's hard as hell to get it down to bearable again. Sorry for the long post. :-(

Welcome! :)
never feel like you have to apologize for a long post-especially in your introduction thread. is it yours to introduce yourself and you did an excellent job.
I am so sorry to hear about your pain. I can TOTALLY sympathize with you except my pain has only plagued me for 6 years. I too,got off opiates-twice. This last time was hell, and although I am in pain,I can't bring myself to trust opiates because just like you,one day you got a script, the next you are left high and dry and for me that meant turning to coping where I could to not get sick.but it's been almost 2 years and I don't crave it-even to relieve the pain.

You are in the right place. Glad you are here. The community is a great source of support, now that you are a member, you now get the info AND the community. since you are familiar with the site, make sure you check out the BLUA and Greenlighter's Guide(links to both are in my signature below). These, combined with the sites Search Engine-located just under the log out function at the top of every page-will act as vital tools for you as you embark on your journey here.

Since you are recently clean, you may want to include some non drug specific forums to keep your mind off of things-if only for a bit.

hello. afraid i can't really help you with the pain shit, i've only ever taken opioids for recreational purposes. maybe you should try using decreasing dosages of kratom for withdrawal, i've heard good things about it and its analgesic properties... that is if you want to use anything at all.

Wow! Thanks for the nice welcome, skillz! I'll be sure to check out your recommendations. I don't know that I can really consider myself 'clean', since I'm sitting here with a Fentanyl patch stuck to my arm! lol Just hoping the damn thing starts working soon. I wish I could live without any monkey-on-my-back help for the pain, but when I tried... I seriously thought of suicide. Anyway, I'll be doing lots of reading and look forward to seeing you in the forums! Thanks again.

Welcome Stone!
After reading your post I would really recommend you take a look at The Dark Side. That is one of our forums for people looking for control over their drug use, looking to get sober, and folks suffering from any kind of mental illness or life problems.
We have a Chronic Pain Mega thread there. I think you'd find a wealth of information and support there.

Hi and welcome! Sounds like a nightmare with the pain and I hope something changes for you in that area in the near future.

If you like to read, visit the Word forum and share your titles. I always like to check out new reads.

I can totally relate to your situation minus the fact that you have been dealing with it for 10 years longer than I have which in itself brings a whole new world of problems. It really helps when you can find a doctor that will work with you on your medications. I used to take the ms contin myself and honestly I never want to be prescribed that stuff again. I had a hard time getting off of it, took about 3 months of dosing down and I was only at 120mg/day. Your dose was so incredibly high tho, I can only imagine trying to come down off that. I was lucky and had xanax and eventually valium on my side for that come down so the only bad part was spending 4 hours a day on the toilet, but from the sounds of it, thats the least of your problems. Can I ask what has plagued you to cause you so much pain? I hope this site serves you as well as it has served me!
