Heroin success stories ... (title is an oxymoron -jc)

Harumscxarum said:
I've been using heroin for 3 years. Never have i been addicted, I haven't even had withdrawals yet, not once. Lately I've been using twice a week for the past...3 months. I've also never overdosed. The only bad thing that's happened to me because of heroin is once I got an abscess that wasn't that bad, but it was bad and I ended up going to the ER. I believe I wouldn't have gone to the ER if I wasn't up on speed for 2 days and paranoid. That ER trip cost me $1700

Heroin has for the most part changed my life for the better, It makes me appreciate being sober sometimes, I look at life differently. I've taken on a more live and let live outlook on life. To me heroin is a lot like love. I also find i never get lonely if I have heroin. All my friends have mates, i have heroin and I'm happy with it. Now If I were to have love and heroin I'd just be set for life. Heroin has somewhat effected my life negatively and thats only because of the social stigma surrounding it, somehow people found out about my use outside of my inner circle of friends. I'm still the same guy as i was before drugs, but some people try to act like I'm not and they talk shit.

I've never stolen anything for heroin, except a small piece of tinfoil from walmart once =P
I've never fucked anyone over, and I never blow off my friends for heroin UNLESS they want to drink, because It's not safe and I end up puking my brains out anyway.

I believe in a way I'm a success story =D

And yes I IV the heroin, i stopped smoking it after year 1.

Bite the hand that feeds
Tap the vein that bleeds
down on my bended knees
I break the back of love for you

Give us an update in a year or so..

I love this question/topic though. I too have wondered the same thing.%)

Sounds like you're at a bit of a crossroads in that youre in the preliminary stages of developing an addiction. You've started convincing yourself that it is possible to use safely and not let things get out of hand.

Yea its true that if you can keep your use of opiates to about 1 day a week maybe sometimes twice but never back to back and probably never experience physical withdrawals. But once you get into that type of schedule its so easy to slip and binge for a week and once you cross over to getting physical w/ds it becomes exponentially harder to quit and pretty much impossible to go back to once a week type use schedules.

Be careful. Nobody can tell you what to do in this situation, but the more info you have the better off you'll be in the long run.

Those were the days...

I haven't touched it in more than a year. I was lucky to be moving around a lot, and dealers came and went. I never kept one dealer for a while. Normally I would use (binge) for 3 days, IV too. Then take a (not-so) nice 4 day break. In those days I would work out, smoke weed, spend time with my friends. This worked fine for me for a while, but when I found an uncontrollable urge to get more on day 5,6, or 7 of the week and I "had" to have it, I went and picked up a few bags or a bundle, and then I deleted the dealers number. This meant that once that was gone, I would have to find a new dealer (you know sometimes I would think long and hard to try and remember it, but that didn't work for me). More often than not it took very long to find another and that was the cost I paid to break my own rules.

sixpartseven: I was talking about using everyday, because i had sort of felt it would be unwise to think i wouldn't end up becoming addicted and a daily user. So that has been in the calculations of for/against.

Harumscxarum: thankyou very much for your post. What if as an aim, users set out to use heroin but not ever steal, or do anything apart from respectable means to get their money for the drug EVER. Could that leave your impression of the substance less dirty, and immoral or life destroying?

As for oxygen not helping in an overose: i read a scientific study of the safe injecting room in Sydney Australia where they have treated only one or two overdoses in about two years with naloxone. ALL of the rest (which are HUNDREDS) have been treated with simply pure oxygen. IS this something that is not a known and regular thing among heroin users?

The thing is it needs to be administered STRAIGHT away. IF you arrive on a scene to someone having overdosed more than a minute ago then you need something like naloxone, but if oxygen was administered immediately through the use of such a technical device that measure for low heart rate then i think there shouldn't be any harm done at all. Or if you have a watcher there to help you and administer it when needed.

Might just take a few minutes for the person to regain consciousness, but shouldn't be any harm to teh brain whatsoever. Please correct me if you don't think this is right.

Even if i never ever try heroin IV myself, i have a passion for understanding it and perhaps helping people that may use.

Funkee: That is a real interesting read. Sounds like an interesting technique.

What about perhaos dosing yourself regularly with something like naloxone (in times when you are not physically addicted) so that you have no prospect of getting high for a few days?

I don't claim this as a solid or worthy idea, but i just wanted to spurn conversation from those knowledgeable in the area.

Harumscxarum, I think that's really interesting that you've been living your life that way with no problems. It's cool that you can manage do that.

But, I think it would be a bad idea for someone to read that post and think "Oh, he did it, so I can too" because there's just a really thin sliver of a chance that you can. If you plan on using Heroin don't plan on not getting addicted.

i think this is a great question, and one that i think about quite often. aldous huxley seemed to be a proponent of the benefits of opiates (or a safer opiate-like substance) on society in the same way you seem to propose. i think people would get along much better if everyone could pop a soma whenever they get upset. but of course there is no such drug (yet).

William S. Burroughs also has a lot to say on the subject, (read Junky if you haven't already)- some good some bad. his theory is that the cells in a junkys body are actually kept in a youthful state and do not deteriorate as quickly as those in a non-user. somehow the junk keeps you young, albeit in a constant cycle of sickness and relief. of course his explanation is pseudo-science at best, it seems to be at least somewhat confirmed by sixpartseven's study.

the more i think about it, the more i realize that any negative effects of heroin on my life has been from acquisition (and less often administration) of the drug and very rarely do problems arise out of its direct (or even side-) effects. i wish i could be a rock star and have millions of dollars to blow on heroin so i could be high all day long, constantly upping my dose to stay high until i die. but then i read stories of the endless line of people in that situation that have managed to fuck up their lives even though they had a limitless and often (relatively) safe supply of the drug. the only way your hypothetical situation could work is you received pharm grade heroin, because even in (or especially in) limitless supply, street heroin can pose a lot of health concerns, not to mention the psychological effects of chasing constant bliss.

there really is no one answer except this one- the situation you posed, as great as it sounds in theory, is in no way attainable by any human being. so dont try. but yeah it would be great. i think deep down thats why a lot of us use the way we do. we seem to think that somehow it will make our lives better... until you come down and reality sets in (along with the sickness) then use again, then sick again, then repeat, and repeat... and repeat, etc.

Hey Chinacat, you sound wise. And i AM heeding the words that people are offering up. I have asked questions and they have been answered for me: if i am being completely honest i know that i'm not a strong willed person when it comes to substances. I will tell myself that i am weak and a failure if i have one more cigarette in a night - and can always find some excuse to eventually light up even though it makes me feel like crap for not being stronger.

I remember reading somewhere that keith richards said he hasnt had a cold in over 30 years and he does a lot of heroin. So that sounds like a success story to me hah.

Its hard to tell when you're sick when you're on heroin all the time. That is true. When I was on heroin, I didn't get a cold or the flu for 2 years. Since being off, a little less than a year, I've been sick something like 4 or 5 times.
Its not that it helps your immune system... you just can't tell when you are sick; it doesn't matter when you're sick.

^yea me too, i used to think that since a lot of dope out here gets cut with thiamine it was helping keep me healthy, but i knew it was because i was high all the time and colds would come and go.

Oh god, I hope dealers don't start cutting the dope with centrum or vitamin c tabs and shit like that... you know "to keep people healthy"

Those are very noble ideas to help save lives but do you really think someone addicted enough to OD would spend money on that shit when they would just as soon sell their own two nuts for another bag of dope haha. A much more realistic solution would be to distribute Naloxone in a portable syringe system much like the epi pen for bee sting victims. It would be dirt cheap to manufacture and have no resale value. They could be cheaply distributed by harm reduction groups if govts would allow it.

that Epi Pen idea is actually a really good one.

And here in Australia it seems the whole idea of harm reduction has been making a bit more progress than in somewhere such as the USA.

We can get free and clean syringes to anyone that needs them, and the supervised injecting room operates as a completely LEGAL place for users to inject. The police made an agreement that they would not harass people within the centre. And users have experienced nurses assess their functioning after dosing, and if they are not fit to leave they keep them i care until they are sweet.

The only thing that stops you doing more & more heroin is death or a lack of resources, and you know what you don't care about the death bit, just the lack or resources.

^The tattoo up there is swell!

I can see it now, some unlucky heroin addict with this life saving system runs out of money. They pawn these machines and trade in the cash for a bag of heroin. Slams it and BAM ODs and dies. How ironic.

I disagree. I think people would begin to lose life-management skills and coping strategies by becoming dependent on the drug and would fall into a cycle of use that would eventually consume their lives. What was once a manageable problem would become after years of using Soma an 'unmanageable' problem and the answer would of course be right there: pop a soma!

Once a large group of people in our society were addicted to Soma the government would be able to easily manipulate/control them.

^ sounds just like methadone, 100 x more evil than any heroin but it's all about control. To me its the perfect solution, ive heard them called shooting galleries, the west can help the afghanis out by buying all their opium and people can get a nice clean fix, and by this come into regular contact with society and get their health/teeth needs met too. But then the drug companies dont get their $$ and the governemnt dont get their $$ and so on and so on. Power back to the people in treating addiction cos fuck knows what treatment progs they've got going on at the moment is utter shit and a disgrace.

lol its a never ending cycle.6 years in and still going. ive been on methadone for 2 years but i only take it when i dont have money .. i think the heroin does keep u from getting sick i havent had the flu since i was like 15. but there are alot more negatives then positives to being a heroin addict.but the government should just let people do what they want there not gonna stop people from getting high so atleast make it safer
