Do many people have problems with their teeth/gums from heroin use? Or is it anything to do with heroin use at all? In my case i know its mainly down to the bad diet that i developed since becoming a regular heroin user years ago. Bad diet & then craving sweet things especially chocolate, i didn't even like chocolate before heroin & now i wake up craving it first thing in the morning, i also drink liters of Lucozade! Methadone must make me crave sweet things as well, coz i haven't had proper heroin in a long long time! Yet i still crave sugar!
My main problem is receding gums, its really REALLY getting bad! The roots of my teeth are totally exposed & it hurts so SO much! So i have to take a whole load of pain killers (non codeine ones
so i can pass drugs test) every day. It kills me to drink anything cold, i just can't do it, i have to brush my teeth with warm water coz cold water totally kills me, i brush my teeth with a soft tooth brush at least 3 times a day, i use Corsodyl mouthwash but the pain of it is unbearable!!!! A mixture of the mouthwash its self causing the pain & the coldness of the mouthwash kills me So now i add warm water to it, but that waters the mouthwash down so it doesn't work as well. There are so many foods & drinks i have to avoid or else take loads of pain killers first.
Does anyone else suffer from receding gums from heroin use? I thought i had a really bad tooth at the back of my mouth, i was sure it needed to be pulled out, but i had a good inspection to-day & its not bad at all, but the gum is completely gone at the back & even the roof of my mouth were the tooth is is receding!!! I'm in agony with it! Can't sleep coz of it & i'm up for work in a few hours!
Is there any good treatment for this that anyone knows of? Can receding gums grow back/repair? Will i have to have tooth pulled even though tooth is not at all bad, i can't stand the pain!!! I'm 40 years old & at this stage i think i'd rather pull every tooth out of my head then go through this constant pain! My teeth often bleed when i brush them. I have talked to my dentist about this three different times, he doesn't care coz i'm on the medical card! He just tells me to use sensidine tooth paste, i do use it, i even rub it onto my gums & leave it on at night when i go to bed as dentist told me to but it doesn't work at all.
Does anyone know of a cure or way to ease pain besides heroin, coz i can't get proper heroin in this kip of a country! Any suggestions? Thanx!
PS. I'm really trying to cut back on length of my posts, i know i waffle on way too much! I'll get there eventually!

I was always worried about this happening to me too but it aint as yet. 13 years use, a good 8 years meth usage plus regular crack too and so far they're ok (touch wood). I do often dream about my teeth crumbling but I think this is probably unrelated!

I saw my dentist about 3 weeks ago and was relieved that i only needed one small filling.
Back in my mid /early 20s when i went through a stage of really hard drug use n Homelessness not cleaning my teeth i had a shit load of work done on my teeth since then apart from a few fillings i have looked after them pretty well n only have lost one big tooth .
My dentist gives me this special prescription only toothpaste with extra flouride and that helps . Sometimes teeth n gum problems are just genetic though.

@Ructions I have also got receding gum but only on a few of my top teeth but my bottom teeth the ones right at the back have both just fallen to pieces over time and I'm sure smoking gear caused it.

Last year I finally got false teeth but I can see the remaining teeth starting to rot too
I think most users of hard drugs get trouble with their teeth
we are lucky here cos we have a dental teaching hospital so treatment is free to everyone and very good facilities-or I would still be in agony with rotting teeth now for sure
I used to have gum disease and I was told to focus on brushing my teeth and with what the dentist described as 'old man toothpaste' the real strong shit
But RUCTIONS,sounds like you are beyond that point and your gums will not grow back so to relieve the pain,you would probably have to have the teeth pulled and get falsies

at least you are not then in pain and they are easier to keep clean so you look like you have great teeth which is always a positive

Personaly I dont think drugs have any effect on teeth, the druggie lifestyle yes defo also as Brimz said the loss of saliva which lets bacteria in to damage the teeth and gums - IM not so sure that gums can't grow back might be wrong but my missis had this problem and got it sorted (dont know details as iu am v v dental phobic) in fact after 12 years of not seeing a dentist and taking shed loads of drugs a few years ago all i needed was a small filling - BUT genes definitly play a part my dad died a 82 with all his own teeth my mum is 72 and has hers.

As for dentist , I think your mouth hygiene plays abig part , brushing 3/4 times a day flossing and a mouth wash can't hurt, + what you eat plays a massive part , fuck all that sweet shit, I hav'nt been dentist in about 15 years, I should go but I am a bit fret, I'd need to be in a very very bad way to even think about goin, but it's goin to happen one Day ,I should think.
But untill that day I'll keep it parked right in the back of my head , right next to the visit to the STD clinic.

Just broke the bad news about my legal situation to my mum
she said that I had told them so many shitty things over the years that they were kinda numb to it
I played it down some and I have to go over at the w/e to see the disappointment in their faces but that's most of it over
I don't know why she thinks that-I've only ever had one problem with the police before;a possession charge

Fuck sake, whoever said marijuana is a useful tool in bringing anything positive while passing the period of withdrawal doesnt know what the fuck they're on about. Seems to be making me focus on how wrong everything is in the world...especially this cluck. Last night was like one of insomnia, naked in the arctic circle without a torch or blanket. I deeply dread tonight...

we all kno the horror of wds - its the worst feeling in the world - im sure everyone knows it only to well - but there is one part of wds that i never here people talk about and i wonder does this happen to everyone?
i often notice that when my wds are comeing on there is a strange smell seems to come from my skin - this happens when i wd from b or phy - its a weird smell - a very distintive one - even if i have just showered i notice this happen once my body starts wds - is it the opiates leaving my body? how come it only happens when i stop using opiates?
does anyone ever notice this? Its such a strange smell that seems to come from all my pores - i never experenced anything like this other when im wd'ing - anyone else notice anything like this?

I have also heard nurses who work on detox wards saying they can smell it
nobody has ever commented to me that they can smell it but it seems quite strong to me and I often wonder if others can smell it too

Yep my Boyfriend & i notice that am well, although he says he has never noticed off me & i have never noticed off him. Yes i feels like its coming out of every pour in your body, its like all the toxic poisons leaving your body! It makes me feel awful when it happens & its always a reminder that its time to take my methadone!

Some nights i'll go to bed & forget to take my methadone (i'm always changing the time of day that i take it) & an hour into my sleep i wake up from a horrible nightmare & i notice the Withdrawal smell & i realize i've forgotten to take my methadone, its a awful feeling!
