Reading through statistics there was a huge amount of overdoses in 99- 00 era due to heroin and it seems to have dramatically dropped off since then! Was there a massive oversupply and hence lower prices or was the stuff back then generally stronger?

^ There may have been a few cases of adulterated heroin going around; it wouldn't be the first time.

Usually we don't allow threads about how quality is bad now or whatever, but I'd like to see if someone can shed more light on these statistics.

There was a huge amount of heroin going around in the late 90s to early 2000s in Melbourne. Psilo has suggested it was due to the dictator in Burma at the time (where most Aus smack comes from). I'd need to do a whole lot more research though. I still remember when the heroin toll was beside the road toll in the Herald Sun.

I've found a few links about heroin trends in ther late 90s, don't know how useful they are as I only skimmed through them.

I don't think anyone would dispute that heroin is weaker these days than it was before the turn of the millenium, certainly atleast in Victoria, if not Australia in general.

The differences are going to vary from person to person and I am sure there are some people now getting dope as good or better as they ever have been, as it realyl comes down to who you know.

I am not going to get into prices as we don't allow it here but if you read enough of those drug trend things it becomes apparent that the smallest purchase quantity prior to the turn of the millenium was smaller than the current one. Prices then don't seem to be too different to now but the increased purity and ability to buy very small amounts would of meant heroin use then was probably more economical and at the very least a habit would be easier to sustain.

I think more comes into play than just drug purity in terms of drug overdoses however, and I think the last decade or so the trend in drug use has turned more towards methamphetamine which has caused less heroin OD's regardless of purity. I have read many times before that every decade or so the taste in drugs tends to shift between uppers and downers so perhaps we are about due another shift back to heroin?

I also remember the heroin toll in the Herald Sun. If I remember it was no where near as high as the road toll. I imagine heroin deaths are much lower now or may involve the use of other depressant type substances.

I believe heroin quality reflects on the overall quantity available in OZ and how many hands it passes through before your needle pokes it, but I’m no economist.

Looking at the ACC 08-09 illegal drug report, clearly shows a slight growing trend. Also shows Burma's production at nowhere near what it was 10yrs ago and Afghanistan’s off the chart. Seems majority of our heroin still comes from Asia.

Anyone got other links to other more recent illicit drug figures or more heroin specific related articles on opium cultivation & seizures abroad?

Back in 1998ish, my first time on Russel St every bloke I walked past was calling me Jason. ;) I had no idea at the time what was going on.

Not long after, a lot of my school mates and some very close friends got caught up in what was the heroin street trade within our area, one the predominant areas located in S.E. Suburbs. For the next 5 years or more I'd always see one of them at Footscray, Russel, Box Hill and our home suburb.
As mobile phones became mainstream I saw my acquaintances less and less. All did jail time at least twice, many didn’t get out of this scene until the heroin supply in OZ dried up much later.
This group I talk of were all from different backgrounds, ages and opportunity. Such a vicious circle is that of heroin for many people.
Most of them now all seem to be well past it.

Tiny bit off topic, but I was wondering if anyone had more links or references to more documentation/information about the heroin trends during this period of time (mid/late 90's - early 00's)?

Having grown up during this period and witnessing first hand how widespread the use of heroin was during this period in Melbourne I've always fascinated by how big it became during that period of time.

is heroin quality over in Australia better than the U.S?

i'm going to say no, definitely not. we don't have as many and large open air markets for starters and getting in the right circle can be challenging.

oh sorry i read quality as quantity at first glance. still i think by average the US % vs Aust. % of purity is still higher. the stats of recent studies on both countries wouldn't be that hard to find through a quick google.

I spent 2 months in NYC over Christmas and sampled heroin from a few different sources and I have to say the quality was almost exactly the same as what I've had in Melbourne over the last year. Maybe the overall quality was slightly better, it's certainly cheaper. I only had no. 3 heroin over there and it's quite different from no.4, at first I was a little turned off by it, it smells quite strange and has the appearance of dirt or dust. I don't shoot anyway but I would be pretty hesitant about putting that in my arm. And it doesn't smoke well at all, it just seems to burn and the smoke tastes foul, its even more of a waste than smoking thr stuff here. I have to say though the most euphoria I've ever had from heroin was from a bag from there.

Sorry this is completely off topic but I just had to blurt it out.
