Hi there. I was just wondering if anyone could give me any idea of the symptoms a friend might display if they were overdosing on opiates specifically heroin. JUst had a bit of a scary moment with a firend who collapsed right after taking a shot (fool had been drinking and had taken some benzos too) and was unresponsive for several minutes with very shallow breathing. I was just about to ring an ambulance, when he was able to tell me not too, and he's now snoring away on the bed, nice deep breaths thank fuck. I use heroin occassionally too, but am always very cautious with doses and don't run in heroin user circles, so i'm not sure what signs I should look out for to tell the difference between a real od and someone who just over did it. Any advice is appreciated.

he might have just passed out from the shot which happens. glad to hear he is OK. i think everyone here can say they'd have done the same thing

blue lips, gasping for air, unresponsive.

ive always smoked my heroin, but one night i was talking to a new neighbor and found out he was also a junky, so we went on a run. Turns out the stuff i was getting was way stronger than he was used to and im pretty sure he ODd and i just didnt know it. He hit he shot and nodded out like 10 seconds later holding the needle, then he was completely out of it i couldnt wake him up AT ALL. Then on the drive home he started gasping really loud every 30 secondsish and kind of making a gurgling sound. Luckily he woke up a half mile from the hospital and saved everybody a lot of trouble.

Keep watching your friend until he is conscious and awake. Call for help if he begins taking on a pale or blueish hue. Call for help if you are unable to wake him.

Also, snoring does not mean he is okay -- seriously. Snoring can be a sign of OD. If you're in doubt, get your friend immediate medical help.

Put him on his side in the rescue position. IME if there still breathing five minutes after the shot they have pulled through without medical help. What a nightmare scenerio I have had 2 call ems twice and it was scary. ambien is fucking with my brain sorry if that doesnt make sense.

usually they turn blue and become unresponsive. You have to check to make sure they are still breathing. I have gone out 3 times and 2 of those times the ambulances were called. The only thing that will help for a serious OD is a shot of narcan (correct me if I am wrong). OD'ing and being a responsible person is not something to play around with. be safe!!

Snoring can be a sign of slowly progressing respiratory depression.

A common misconception is that if the person doesn't drop immediately after injecting, they're fine. In the research on fatal opiate ODs, the average length of time between injection and death is 1 - 3 hours.

You're friend may not be ok at all, you need to watch they're breathing very carefully and look for signs of oxygen deprivation (eg: blue lips, finger tips). If that occurs, lay them on their back, tilt their head back and start breathing for them. Otherwise leave them in the recovery position and keep an eye out for vomit or any other obstruction to their airway. If in doubt call an ambulance immediately.

Cheers for the help. I did put him in the recovery position as it was the only thing I could think to do and his breathing got a lot stronger. I kept a check on his breathing throughout and he never went blue or anything, and woke up after a few hours very apologetic. He only took 2/3 of the shot too, as I convinced him to leave it during the injection process thank god, or I think he definitely would have been in an ambulance.

I witnessed this the othe day for the first time. A few minutes after the shot he nodded out and a minute or two later was turning blue and not really breathing at all. Thank god my friend keeps narcan around he shot him up with narcan. After 2 minutes he made a huge gasping sound like his breathing just started up again. But that wasn't even the end of it once the narcan started going into effect he started seizing out and flailing around and his breathing was very erradic. After a few minutes of that he finally stopped seizing and slowly came to. It was really fucking scary.
