I have a friend who uses heroin recreationally. She has used for almost 2 years, iv for a few months. When she scores, she can do a seemingly endless number of bags. The rush she gets is minor when it is noticeable (which requires 8+ bags) and fades quickly, however the drug keeps her in high spirits for several hours after administration. She rarely if ever nods and usually find H has a stimulating effect. Curiously, despite her frequent use of large amounts of the drug (>25 bags daily), when she stops taking it the withdrawal syndrome is surprisingly weak. It definitely brings her discomfort on par with a cold, but after a day or two she is back to normal. Later, she will return to the drug at her customary high doses and experience no reduction in tolerance.
Anyone here experience anything similar? High tolerance and low withdrawal seem counterintuitive, but I have seen her use and withdraw and can confirm this odd phenomenon. The only explanation I can imagine is that she has an unusually low count of opioid receptors.
