Heroin - Increase in heart rate and blood pressure

SWIMs first post.

SWIM has used tar for 6 months, started injecting but then preferred smoking. Why? SWIM seems to get a really fast heart rate (over 110 BPM) and elevated blood pressure (sometimes even up to 208/110 as measured by EMT). Smoking causes fewer scares because have to smoke a lot to get that effect, like 0.3 gram in one session, where even 0.05 gram inject can mean emergency room visit.

SWIM normal blood pressure 130/85 and resting heart rate of 70 BPM. SWIM expects heroin (black tar) to lower BP and slow heart rate, but experiences quite the opposite.

Friends say source has super fire and bomb so quality is not in question. Smoke has strong vinegar taste just a FYI.

Can anyone explain why SWIM's heart rate and blood pressure go way up with heroin?

You're right that it's unusual for heroin to raise your heart rate and BP, it normally does the opposite. The only possibilities I can really think of are:

- maybe you just have a weird unusual reaction
- maybe the heroin is cut with something which causes these effects (ie a stimulant) (and some people are sensitive than others so even if others say they don't notice it doesn't rule it out)
- maybe it is like a panic attack from getting a rush/getting really high

I have experienced the latter two. I don't know what more to say, as we try to discourage speculation here. (I might be speculating too much already, since I can't know for sure why this is happening to you). I guess try a different supplier and see if that makes a difference, and try using a really small quantity at first to see if it causes these symptoms.

Okay so yes small amounts still cause issues. I would think that others would say the same thing about heart rate at least, but they seem fine. I have experienced panic attacks, but even small amounts of smoke which has no worries still causes BP spike and fast heart rate.

Wondered if anyone else has ever experienced this?

pain clinic doc says everyone has different experience...oh well kinda sucks
perhaps there is some cut that is causing issue

As I said, I have experienced it. For me, most of the times it was from particular cuts, and some of the times it was from anxiety, even if it was subconscious anxiety. It was more like triggered by the rush/high than really being consciously afraid before using it. Does that make sense? I know this has happened to others as well. If this happens every time for you it could be a conditioned response, like after it happened a couple times, your brain decided that was the appropriate reaction to using heroin. But for me this definitely didn't happen every time I used heroin (although it would happen every time I used a particular batch, hence why I say the cut was to blame).

Quite a few of the times when I'm sure it was the cut other people I knew said they didn't have the same problem, some people are just more sensitive to certain cuts than others. For example, if someone takes stimulants and has a tolerance they may not feel effects from a stimulant cut.

But of course you may also have some weird idiosyncratic response to heroin itself. It happens.

I thought you said with smoking it it took a lot to give these effects?

Anyway, all anyone can really do is tell you the different possibilities of things that have been known to cause this in others or whether they have experienced similar effects.

Again, I think the only thing you can do is try a different supplier and see if you get the same effects. Or better yet stop using heroin

got me 40 count 8mg sub strips from the doc and i think i will try to get off, i'm tired of wasting money on smokin. i totally understand what you are sayin about being conditioned for panic attack, i have wondered if that was the case. today have different batch and i am nodding can barely keep one eye open while i type this to you. so i think there is something in the cut. i am going to try this process of purification that i found on the net. 1 gram should yield 100 to 300 mg of clean h (+ some salt).

you are right. getting a HUGE rush from accidental big inject throws me into panic attack, but for the most part i think that there is something in the cut.

This simply sounds like a paradoxical reaction... Opiates do not make everyone calm.

Sounds like anxiety. My heart use to race right before and after I would inject, but as soon as I realize everything was fine it would slow down.

I'm thinking that there may be a few cases of panic attack, but 95% of the time it is not a panic attack or anxiety. No matter what the cut I always have increased heart rate and elevated blood pressure. I can even take 1/2 mg klonopin so i am chilled out and then smoke about two lines of tar and presto, heart rate of 90 and BP of 155/92

Normal being 70 bpm and 125/82

If i have a really big dose or i smoke too much then my heart rate is 114 bpm and BP can be 210/114

I'm not sure what this means. I feel better takin small dose of benzos but i hear that is a bad mix with heroin. I wonder if my reaction to heroin makes me the exception to the rule.

Do people die from a heart attack/stroke with heroin causing this type of reaction? I have only ever experienced labored breathing, slow pulse, and low BP like a couple times. SOMEONE HAS GOT TO HAVE INFO ON THIS FOR ME PLEASE HELP

Heroin is sometimes cut with caffeine to make it more easily smoke-able.
