Yeah, in fact, you can measure the difference between the volume of water prior and post adding the powder, and if this is done in the proper equipment, you can use it to determine how much powder you had to begin with if you don't have a scale.

^ Remember to read the value at the bottom of the meniscus!

I wasnt aware that after its mixed in together it increases the volume, thanks alot i hadnt thought of that.

It's called water (or fluid) displacement. It's used to figure out the volume of anything that doesn't have a specific shape with a designated volume formula. As tricomb stated the volume of your heroin was 5ml since it's the measurement of the displaced fluid, or difference between initial volume and final volume after adding the heroin to it.

I loved chemistry in high school! I'm a Biochemistry major at my university and mannnnn I go into so much detail I never would've thought possible in high school lol

On the East Coast I always drew back pretty much exactly the same ammount of liquid as the ammount of water I poured over my heroin, with minor increases. However, when it comes to tar, the volume is so great that it can sometimes double the ammount of liquid you started off with.

Cotton filters result in a 21% decrease in the total concentration of heroin which could explain why the final volume isn't much higher than the initial volume. It's probably due to the amount of solution absorbed by the cotton. Micron filters result in only a 2.8% decrease in heroin concentration after filtration (source), so although people say that they won't use them due to cost, part of the cost is covered by the larger amount of heroin that ends up in the shot.

Ittle off topic, but to Mass08, I did do pharm research , and while its really very interesting stuff, I'd highly reccommend you pursue a masters degree or Phd so that u can make a good living financially as well as intellectually. Without an advanced degree you have a ceiling of lab manager or head lab tech---good positions, but its always better to have the option of going higher instead of being limited.. Just my .02

I assume you mean 35 units not ml? If it doesn't require burning (evaporating a little water at the same time), adding anything to something else is going to increase volume by the amount added...

Not quoting anyone directly, but my understanding is that volume of water + mass of powder does not necessarily equate to increased volume. Increased mass / density of solution for sure, but not necessarily volume. Doesn't dissolution mean you could actually get less volume from given vol + given mass in a properly dissolved solution?
