A heroin buy ended with a 22-year-old Indiana woman in critical condition and possibly paralyzed, and police on the hunt for her shooter and accomplice.
“It’s just a sad situation. It happens here too often,” Dayton police Sgt. Moises Perez said Wednesday morning. The woman was struck in the neck by a small-caliber bullet as her boyfriend attempted to flee from their assailants in the 2100 block of Esmeralda Avenue shortly after 10 p.m. Monday.
Perez said the woman is in critical condition at Miami Valley hospital awaiting possible surgery. The sergeant said the woman was paralyzed from the chest down, but was unsure if the paralysis would be permanent. A hospital spokeswoman, citing privacy concerns, would only confirm the woman was in the hospital.
According to Perez, the situation began when the woman and her 30-year-old boyfriend traveled from Portland, Ind. — just north of Richmond, Ind. — to Dayton to buy heroin. “Her boyfriend said he’d been clean for a month-and-a-half, but that his girlfriend felt a need for the drug,” Perez said.
The couple got off Interstate 70 and traveled to the Sunoco station at the intersection of Free Pike and Salem in Harrison Twp. As they pulled up, they called out to two young men leaving the store, asking where they could buy heroin, the couple told police. Surveillance tapes confirm the couple’s story.
One of the two young men approached the car and a deal was negotiated. That young man told the couple to follow his car, Perez said. The couple followed the car to Esmeralda where the young man approached the car. The woman saw he was carrying a revolver and alerted her boyfriend. The young man shoved the revolver through the open passenger window and demanded the couple hand over all their cash, Perez said.
The boyfriend lunged across the front seat, grabbed the revolver and struggled with the young assailant.
“During the struggle, the boyfriend said he could feel the hammer (of the revolver) strike his hand, keeping the gun from firing,” the sergeant said.
With both hands off the steering wheel, the boyfriend stomped on the gas to flee the assault. The assailant was able to break free and fired three rounds at the out-of-control car, hitting the rear passenger window, Perez said. The round shattered the window, went through the front-seat head rest and struck the woman in the neck. Perez said doctors where considering removing bullet, which is lodged in the woman’s spine.
Tuesday morning, police released surveillance video from the Sunoco, showing sharp and clear images of the alleged shooter and a companion. Any one with information is asked to call 333-COPS.
“We believe both of these young men are from the neighborhood,” Perez said. He added witnesses have been extremely helpful.
