Hey ya'll,

This is an obnoxiously long post, and I apologize in advance for it...

I'm ridiculously inexperienced in these areas, and I'm having the damndest time finding any answers...

I have chronic insomnia - it started in middle school (no real explanation behind it; the fuck does a middle schooler have to stress out about?) and ever since, it's popped up on its own every few months or so (I'm 27 now), but during periods of extreme stress/traumatic events, oh brother, forget it; it'll be weeks before it subsides.

Naturally, I've taken a lot of steps to cure/combat it - practicing healthy sleep hygiene, etc. And yeah, sometimes that works. But more often than not, it just gets to a point where you're like "If I don't get one - JUST ONE - long, deep, healthy, great night of sleep this week, I'm going to literally lose my mind. And take everyone with me" and try to knock yourself the fuck out before that happens.

I have a bit of an iffy tolerance and a lot of experiences with different pharmaceuticals/herbs:
(Feel free to skip all this shit; just figured I'd get the "I've already tried that"s out of the way)

Pharms:
OTCs - used for years and have a crazy tolerance; I usually take a few 2-3 hours before taking a prescription sleep aid, to help me wind down even further

Z-drugs - all of them, at various doses, and they've been hit-or-miss (or have been recently rescheduled so I can no longer obtain them from my doctor without a fight; Sonata worked BEAUTIFULLY, and I didn't develop much of a tolerance for months, but now that it's been rescheduled, my doctor refuses to write for them, and she'll give me baby doses of Ambien or Lunesta that do nothing but piss me off)

Antidepressants - low-to-moderate doses of everything under the sun; trazodone (useless), doxepin (useless), Seroquil wasn't horrible, but it made my heart race, as did amitriptyline

Muscle relaxers - I was prescribed 10mg Flexeril when I got off of my opiate pain medication back in November, and was warned about it kicking my ass...I can take 30mg and finish out the day like a hummingbird. Never tried Soma, but there aren't many doctors in Colorado who will prescribe it (which I'm glad for; it looks kind of scary)

Gabapentin - I also used these when getting off the pain meds, and the first few times (in various doses), they made me feel weird enough to where I just wanted to lay down, but even after all these months, they still somehow don't effect me much.

Benzos! - yaaaay, benzos...I don't feel much with Valium, Ativan, or Xanax, but klonopin is sexy as hell; 2mg of klonopin knocks me OUT for the night. However, since I don't have a script for them, I'm very rarely afforded the luxury of having them. Which is kind of a good thing; I've seen my mother go through benzo withdrawals, and it looks so painful and scary. No thanks.

Herbs and Bullshit:
I'll just cut to the chase. Passionflower, skullcap, valerian, catnip, magnolia bark, ashwagandha, in various forms, combinations, extracts, and doses? - I want my goddamned money back. In moderate-to-high doses, yes, I felt a little something, but I'm 90% sure it was the grain alcohol in the extracts. Complete rubbish for me. Which really bummed me out; I really, REALLY wanted to be able to turn to herbs instead of pharmaceuticals.

Kava, Phenibut, and MMJ, in various doses, ROAs, both alone and combined with all these other herbs, yes, these three kind of work, to some degree...like, 1 degree...and, being a Coloradan with a card, I've consulted dispensaries and budtenders in a 20 mile radius, and still haven't found a strain that has the sleep-inducing and anxiolytic properties I need without making my heart race (for some reason, if my heart is pounding while I'm trying to sleep, it freaks me the fuck out and keeps me awake).

It doesn't really belong in this post, because none of the strains/extracts induce sleep for me, but, kratom absolutely saved my ass when I got off of narcotic pain meds. No bullshit. Like, tapered-from-no-less-than-210mgs-of roxicodone-and-80-120mgs-of-oxycontin-a-day-for 4-5 years-down-to 60mgs/40mgs-in-just-over-a- week-and-then-jumped-off-at-40mgs-two-days-later kind of no bullshit. Find a quality vendor with quality product, and I promise you, it can be done painlessly. Thanks, kratom <3

**If you skipped all that bullshit**

Since klonopin works so well (and is smartly unobtainable), I've been researching herbs that contain/deliver similar properties/effects to benzos. The three that have continuously popped up have been mulungu, dan shen, and corydalis, but there's so much differing information and experiences, and I'm in over my head trying to make decisions.

Does anyone have any experience/reports regarding these three?? Everyone seems to agree that extracts are the way to go, and that mulungu 5x, dan shen 5x, and corydalis 10x-40x, will be the most effective in helping me, but I've found only a few vendors who carry the extracts, and none of them are in stock. I've found even fewer vendors who carry the whole bark/roots (so far, I've only been able to order 1oz of shredded mulungu bark; the vendors who are carrying dan shen extracts look sketchy, and the corydalis is on weeks-long backorder). I'm Polish as fuck, which makes me a bear in attempting something as delicate as making my own extract, and I'm scared to death to waste money on a shitty product. Or, worse, fucking up and ruining a decent product.

Any experiences, words of wisdom, advice??
It'd be greatly appreciated!

I tried Mulungu a few times the bark its effective. I recommend it.
Boil the bark with water for 45-60 minutes( you will have to replace the water as it evaporates) and then drink it. Stronger than both Kava and Valerian a lot.

Anxiolytic effect is nice very mellow and you wake up refreshed the next day.

Yaaaay, that's what I was hoping to hear...
Do you have any experience with grinding it into powder? The woman I bought the mulungu from said to just boil the entire ounce of shredded bark down to one cup, and I'm reeeeally not trying to sound like a tight-ass, but, damn, the whole ounce gone in just one use?? I really can't tell if she's being honest, or if she's trying to drum up repeat business by saying I have to totally use up whatever amount I purchased from her...I'm, like, 76% sure I've read some accounts of people grinding the bark and using a few teaspoons/tablespoons of the powder to make a decoction...but, then again, they were just testing these herbs for recreational purposes, and since they apparently didn't find any, didn't follow up on reporting any effects for possible therapeutic purposes. Bastids.

Oh hell, now I'm discouraged about the kava; the two sources I bought from come highly recommended and are pretty up there in quality...idk, maybe my body just doesn't take any shit from kava?...

Kava can be a hit or miss kind of drug. IME I either end up taking way too much or taking not enough and feeling nothing. In high doses you act drunk, but it's not pleasant.

True Kava kava is a nice substance. I am getting good 30 percent Kavalactones.. I find the effect to be a strong sedation mild hypnotic effects. Slowls you down nicely. The Mood lift is nice and also it stabilizes your mood this blend that I've been getting feeling less anxious, irritated and jittery during and more so on a stable plane( my mood) .
My source of Kava is good , do not find it Euphoric or Drunk type of effect. But very therapeutic eases anxiety also seems to have Nootropic properties. I focus a bit better.

Erythrina Mulungu- I have tried this herb for Anxiety and Sleep problems too. Its equivalent to like 20-30 mg of Diazepam. Really you should give it a shot. It relaxes your whole, very nice muscle relaxant and eases mental tension. Also has sedative and hypnotic properties a bit different than Kava but perhaps even more potent.
I had dried Bark of the tree. Very nice and its a tonic as well stabilizes your nervous system makes you less irritable.

Both Mulungu and Kava give effects similiar to low to moderate benzo dosages.ANd they are both a lot more potent than Valerian. They are the most potent Herbal ANxiolytics and sedative/hypnotics.

For Depression try Kanna( sceletium tortuosum) and day time anxiety. It is a lot more stimulating somewhat Euphoric relaxes your muscles Boosts your mood, lifts it, causes a Euphoric rush, Appetite suppression mental and physical stimulation and a mild high, more of a buzz. Very good for anxiety and depression. No sedative hypnotic effects though. It seems to release Serotonin.

DAMMIT.

I got my hands on some corydalis 5x and dan shen 5x, AND...nothing.

I couldn't find any straight answers about what to do with the powders, and figured dissolving 2g of the corydalis and 5g of the dan shen in some almost-hot water and just tossing the whole drink back would be effective, but, it wasn't =/

My mulungu came in, and I did a combination tea/decoction with 3 tablespoons (basically let it boil/simmer with a lid for about an hour, then let it simmer uncovered for 45 mins) and dammit, nothing much happened.

I did use the rest of my mulungu up the next night - just over 4 tablespoons in a tea - and I decided to add 2-4.5g and 8g of the dan shen, and, I definitely felt something, but, dang it, not as well as I'd hoped...what am I doing wrong???

I have another ounce of mulungu coming in; I'm going to use the whole thing and see what happens.

That's a lot of mulungu... I would question your source.

I got some mulungu extract awhile back and I wouldn't say it was as strong as the Klonopin I was used to but it was very noticeable... I just put the extract in a capsule and swallowed it.

Unfortunately, the company that I got it from is now out of business and just has links to other vendors of legitimate sustainable rainforest products and I can't speak about any of those.

You'll be hard pressed to find anything natural that comes closes to benzos as a hypnotic. A 20% Valerenic Acid extract is the closest that I ever came and at that point you might as well be taking Valium. I use trazodone as a hypnotic now and I love it. I see that you've tried that and it doesn't work for you so I'm imagining that antihistamines are out of the question as options. If you haven't tried mirtazapine, that would be the one I would recommend. Low doses are sedating, like 15mg. Higher doses used for antidepressant effects are NOT, however. Trazodone functions mostly the same. 50mg will put me to sleep, 100mg will keep me up about half the time with a weird body high.

Really the only effective sleep remedies are benzos, Z-drugs, atypical antipsychotics, and agents that function as antihistamines or adrenergic antagonists. None of the herbal remedies mentioned will be potent enough to induce sleep if you don't get hypnotic effects from Valium because they are about as effective as Valium as a hypnotic at best and Valium, Ativan, and Xanax are the least sedating benzos in my opinion while Klonopin ranks as one of the most (even after being on it for years at 3mg/day, it still made me tired after every 1mg dosage).

Rachel, Wow! you must have a highly functioning enzymatic inhibition thang going on. Maybe a combo of some Grape Fruit Juice and your herb of choice could do the trick.

Also try CBD. Love it for insomnia, specially with bud.

I am so looking forward to moving to Denver this summer- free CBD : D Hallalujah! ^_^

lol, Grape Fruit Juice??

I got my hands on some Drohibinol and played around with 5-25mg doses; I think the only time it really works is when it's washed down with a hybrid tea, lol...

(You picked the right place; the county I live in isn't voting on the recreational bill until April, and they're probably going to say 'NO'...I have no idea WHY; it's not like we DON'T need $1.5 revenue, lol...ass-backwards town...)
