OK, as an intelligent person reading these posts who has never done this, let me say that I am now more confused than before I began reading it.
What EXACTLY is "chasing the dragon"?
What are the two most accepted ways of smoking tar vs. powderized heroin?
Be specific, use descriptive words - for example, don't type "take some tin foil and wrap it around the pen tube." Instead, use specific lengths, widths, etc. Does it go all the way around the tube to make it's own tube, or does it go mostly around, forming a boatish design?
How EXACTLY is this "boat" made? How long is it? How much tin foil is used? Is it wrinkly? etc.
One person with a really good descriptive post could give an indepth and comprehensive explanation of how to do this without all the wordiness and redundant posts that confuse the issue!

i *heard* your supposed to mix the H with water, and provide a flame so it evaporates into a smoke then u get a straw and suck it up?

As far as smoking tar, most everyone I know, though that limits my input, uses foilies. those damn boats I was talking about.
what we do is take a six inch section of foil, shiny side towards flame, inhale from less-shiny side, and bend the foil into a cupped-hand shape, as if you were washing your face.
to get a good valley in the foil, pull the bottom corners taught, and one should form in the crease.
I trhen apply water so that the tar won't bunch up and char, limiting the actual amount of drug that is vaporized effectively.
disperse the tar before smoking as i described earlier.

It is called "Chasing The Dragon" because when Chinese addicts in Shanghai during the 1920s saw the heroin vapors rising off of the foil they thought that it looked like a curling dragons tail.By the way,that is also the who and when of where the process first gained currency.Shanghai addicts would take a pharmaceutical heroin tablet,crush it,and inhale the vapors as it burned.
The "boat" you are asking about originated in Thailand and is primarily used for smoking "Yaba."These are methampetamine pills that are made in Mynammar [Burma] and are hugely popular throughout S.E.Asia.I have never seen or heard of anyone using one of these "boats" to smoke heroin.In order to smoke heroin effectively you need to have a very smooth piece of tinfoil.
In S.E.Asia,where the process began and is still the primary way of ingesting heroin,i've seen users smoke in one of two ways:1]Placing a small bit of heroin powder on smooth tinfoil,they hold it above a lit candle while inhaling the vapor with a rolled paper tube.As the heroin heats it turns to oil.The foil is held at a slight incline so that the oil will run in a bead.As the bead of oil is running down the foil the user will keep pace with his/her paper tube so as not to lose any of the vapor.2]The user places a bit of 3 in a common cigarette.As the heroin burns off it crackles.In #1,the process is called "Chasing The Dragon."In #2,the process is called "Playing The AckAck Gun"because of the sound produced when smoking this way.
The powder heroin that can be smoked is heroin#3.It is a dark brown to light grey powder that has little lumps in it.This is the heroin that requires the citric acid catalyst in order to be injected.When this type is manufactured the cook adds up to 40% caffeine in order to optimize the smoking process.They also usually add quinine,strychnine,and phenobarbitone.If you are in the U.S. you will probably never see it.Smoking any other type of powder is a waste as it will burn much too fast.
The 1 type of heroin found in the U.S. that is fit for smoking is "black tar."Tar is good for smoking because of its manufacturing process;Refined opium is directly treated with acetic anhydride instead of first converting the opium to morphine base and then to morphine.Because of this process the heroin retains much of the residual plant product allowing it to burn at lower tempatures than the powder forms.
Personally,I have found that smoking tar is a satisfactory experience.The high is significantly different than #3 heroin.There is none of the add ons one finds with #3.

Well sofa...As my teenage son would say,"My bad."I ammended my post in that I listed a way for smoking opium and not #3.I suppose that I should take that as a hint to not post when not in my right mind[but then I wouldnt post at all].Per the matchbox,theres no opium actually in the box.The box is just used to inhale the fumes.I dont think that I would pick that route but it seems to be rather popular.When I last visited my inlaws in Malaysia,it was very popular.

The problem with that description is that you would waste most of your material.It is essential to have a flat piece of foil in order to provide an unencumbered surface for the heroin oil to run as it is heated.Also,in the past I have seen people using paper towel tubes as a stem as shown in that link but have found them ineffective.The vapors come up in a curling,thin trail.A narrow tube such as an empty Bic pen body or even a glass stem works great.
