help with picking an SSRI

My mother's doctor suggested that she take paxil for environmentaly caused depression. However, she went to a paxil side effects message board and was throughly scared by the list and description of the side effects. She doesn't use any drugs besides the occasional caffinated beverage. In your opinion, what is the best SSRI (most effective with the least side effects) and why? If not an SSRI, what drug would you suggest for a short term cure for anxiety and depression. She just wants to be able to "hold things together" until her life is in a better balance. thanks for the help

There's nothing more effective then benzodiazapines for short term treatment of anxiety.
 
I realize that, and she is going to get some xanax as well. What I am asking about is a drug that she would take everyday. I hope this makes sense.

She will, no doubt, be taking xanax everyday. I'm confused about what your asking. Is she looking for short term or long term care? For short temr care, xanax should be all she will need. Though benzos arent typically used to treat depression, they certainly are very effective. For long term care, she will probably get put on an SSRI. I dont have anything good to say about any of them. I will say that Paxil seems to be the worst. I watched a couple of friends go thru withdrawal from paxil and it wasn;t pretty at all.
 
Here is the deal…. They don’t really know how your brain works, or these drugs exactly. They know that SSRI’s block the reuptake of 5-ht. What does that mean…. Well, People who have lower levels of this particular chemical in their brain seem to be depressed. There is a huge gaping wound in the knowledge we have accumulated and what we know about how depression works. This is why claiming that depression is environmentally caused seems a little premature to meat best, and like quackery at worst.
Xanax is prescribed by doctors for acute panic attacks and anxiety. Not depression. In fact people who suffer moderate to severe depression may have their condition worsened over time by taking CNS depressants. That is not the right drug to start out on.
She will, no doubt, not be on Xanax for a long time.
She will need to try the SSRI’s out. It is really the only way to find out. She should follow her doctors orders, and make sure she communicates with him/her about any problems she has due to side effects. She may want to consider talking to therapist as well. If one works they will use it, if it doesn’t she will switch until she finds one she likes or stops taking them all together and looks for alternatives.
