Help With Mucinex D (NOT DM) PLEASE!

Hello there, Bluelighters! I am new to this, and have a question I need answered hopefully sooner rather than later, and I would appreciate any help given. Since returning from England, I have been cursed with a sinus infection from HELL. It's been 2 months since my return, and antibiotics do not help. The only relief I have found is from MUCINEX D, MAXIMUM STRENGTH. Not to be confused with Mucinex DM. Just to clarify, Mucinex D (MAX Strength) has 1200 mg guaifenesin + 120 mg pseudoephedrine. DM has dextromorph-something instead of pseudoephedrine. ANYWAY, although I like to get high, my question has nothing to do with a high. Basically, the guaifenesin KILLS my stomach even in the smallest dose, but the pseudoephedrine works wonders for my sinuses. I was hoping someone could tell me if I can separate the two? This tablet is about 3/4 orange and 1/4 white, and my guess is that the orange layer is the extended release guaifenesin and the white layer is pseudoephedrine. Again, that's just a guess. I'm hoping someone will tell me that it's as simple as separating the layers, but I know better than that. Help on this would be appreciated. I'd ask the pharmacist, but we all know how well THAT would go over. I have spent HOURS today researching this, but my work was in vain. I'm always up for a good high, but right now I just want to feel better. It does help that I get a good buzz when I take two at a time but I know I'm not supposed to do that. Besides, the tummy ache doubles when I do that anyway. And do you need a RX for just straight pseudoephedrine? Any help with this would be great. Thanks for your time and for reading this! Hope you guys can find an appropriate place to post this! THX! :)

i think you answered your own question.

Not really. It's just a guess. Hence "guess". Not trying to be rude; I would just appreciate some insight. Hoping maybe someone can either confirm my "guess"or shoot it down with a more scientific explanation.

I have no idea, but I hope you feel better. Maybe you can go to a dr and explain your problem and they can prescribe you something.

I have no experience with Mucinex D, but, I've heard people attempt this with DM. Both layers contained DXM and guanifsen I'd just assume that it's the same for Mucinex D.

Try your best to find something with only P/ephedrine as the ingredients.

thank you, and I think you may be right...as much money as I've spent on this crap, I just need to bite the bullet and take my uninsured ass to the doc again and hopefully get a scrip that works out of it.

And about finding a med with just "p/ephedrine", do you mean that there are OTC meds with just pseudoephedrine only? I'm kind of a dummy with this stuff.

Thanks for the insight and well wishes, guys! Advice for the day: Never travel to the UK between January and March. It's cheaper travel, but I always get sick. Now this infection won't go away. My ears even feel so clogged I can't swallow or hear. It sucks not having insurance, LOL!

Maybe try an urgent care facility and see if they take payments. Might destress you some. Some docs are willing to work with you. Good luck, I know how it feels to travel and pick up a bug. Get well soon!

Ask for Sudafed, I am pretty sure it is OTC.

If OP is from the states, its OTC, you just have to ask the pharmacist for it, since its behind the counter. I am guessing something like an agent lemon extraction would separate the two in mucinex D, but its a long drawn out process just to get pseudoephedrine, especially when you can just go to the store...

Or maybe look into getting some Claritin-D. 10mg Lortadine and 240mg of pseudoephedrine. Did a quick search and the lortadine should also help with the infection. It's not exactly the same but it helps a lot with my allergies and my nose is usually fucked up all the time.

Thanks everyone! This has helped a lot, and there are some great ideas here! God bless!
