Hey guys!

I've posted about this before but I am still having trouble finding any pertinent information/sources regarding this topic. I am a college sophomore pursuing a bs in biochemistry at UW Milwaukee. I am attempting to transfer to UW Madison to pursue a bs in pharmacology/toxicology. I have a copy of Foye's Medicinal Chemistry to look over. I still feel quite lost as to what courses I should be taking. I obviously am pursuing chem/math courses but aside from that I am taking psych courses as well. Are there any american pharmacologists who would be willing to dole out some info? Even if you aren't an american id still like to hear what you have to say but from what I've come to understand about education in this field specifically european schools are set up differently. I am over the recreational aspect to the knowledge and im trying to make a serious career of it. I fear being marginalized and excluded for my beliefs especially after witnessing the drama over the drug czar of englands decisions. I also resent and worry about the trivial distrust and dislike amongst the well known pharmacologists who've become well known through psychedelic research in america. A final worry is about cases like that of Dr. Loren Moshen. I am asking in the most polite manner if you have achieved your degree what must I do to achieve the same for myself? Also what is the field like? Could you elaborate on your day to day? Thanks guys!

-Doctorate hopeful

PS: I have looked into joining the ACS but I cannot tell whether or not they will help. I also (attempt to) read my subscription to the british assoc of psychopharmacology's journal. Is the comparable American Psychiatric Society (I believe their name is) journal as reputable and as intriguing?

First, university should have several academic advisers readily available to help you get to your desired goal as quickly as possible.

I would not be afraid of being marginalized as your desired field is pursued by scholars around the world. If you were to earn your doctorate in pharmacology or toxicology your career would by and large be research. I know you realize this. I would research extensively all branches of pharmacology and any related field to find your exact niche. There are a litany of fields related to pharmacology/neurobiology/immunology etc.

With that being said, I have my Bachelor's in English with Concentration in Professional Writing and Public Discourse and will likely be going to law school Fall 2012. You and I are complete opposites academically.

As much as I love this site, I doubt if this is the place to help make a career decision in something as specialized as you are interested in.

Hope this helps.

If my advisers even knew what pharmacology was this would be a bit easier (hence the want to transfer.)
Although I heed your words im somewhat confused by the premise of 'heres some help but it wont help.'

Yeah...

Could you contact the school you intend on transferring to and see if they can give you some direction?

That's a really good idea. My sister (5 years my senior) attended the school im thinking of transferring to and got her bs in biochem. From what she's told me I am on the right track. I was posting this thread mostly to learn about the field. Its hard to get in touch with any working professionals in my area without actually working. I do know there are at least a handful of pharmacologists on the site but for obvious reasons they keep a low profile. Its worth a call/email but were in between semesters at the moment. Ill see where that goes.
