Help Vets! How to keep from getting addicted to Opiates???

i did it once a night for a few months and got hooked. pretty much the same story as you. i would take it in moderation, if you must.

ive kep my tolerance low by:
a: i HAVE TO. i can ONLY get 120 7.5/325 hydros a month and thats it. no more. so EVER day i have to take the same dose, never up it.
b. i take dxm at 30-90 mg in the morning. i swear to fucking god its worked for me
c. if you arent usign to "catch a buzz" you can actualy maintain a dose for quite awhile.
by the way 1 day on 2 off would KILL ME fuck that shit, after one day of using hydro im thrown into bad wd within hours jsut like xanax. fuck that shit. i
i also take a grapefruit pill or drink juice and it makes the experience last much longer
when im out, i Lope it the fuck up
peace

If you stay at 5-10 mg and only dose 3 times a week, no you won't experience withdrawals, but after a short time it will feel like you took absolutely nothing. If it was possible to get high off of 10mg forever, then there wouldn't be people out there with 200mg/day habits.

The standard rule is if that if you can use for 1 day and not use for 2 days, and at least follow that use pattern then you can avoid physical withdrawal. Using and trying to avoid addiction tests your psychological willpower and it's hard not to give in to your cravings and desire to be high daily. The, "use 1 day, skip 2" trick holds true for most opioids, but not all. With certain longer lasting drugs like methadone you could probably still experience withdrawal from using just a few times per week.
^ QFT. Assuming that you have sufficient self-control, this is probably the best idea for you since you don't suffer from chronic pain.

I must say, however, that addiction can sneak attack you at any time. I used to tell myself that I would never get addicted to benzodiazepines, but I ended up becoming addicted as fuck. Benzodiazepines do have a much longer half-life, but the comparison holds, as it shows how self-control can wane over extended periods of abuse.

What worries me is the poster's statement that if he has them on hand he finds it hard to resist taking them. I understand completely. I'm the same way. The best way for me to avoid a problem is to keep it as far away as possible. Look, dude, no fooling, taking 30 mg of hydrocodone a day will lead to dependence. The kicker is, if you're spreading it out throughout the day, from my experience as a chronic pain patient, you may not become noticeably tolerant to the analgesic effects. Either way, when you run out, you'll suffer.

I'm guessing you've never been through withdrawal before. Withdrawing from 45 mg of hydrocodone a day for six months was truly lame, and it doesn't even *begin* to scratch the surface of withdrawal faced by a "real addict". Regarding DXM: The jury's still out on this one, folks. We have no real long-term studies about DXM's effects on tolerance. We know that NMDA antagonists can prevent fentanyl-induced hyperalgesia, for example, but that's very short-term. You might be able to put off tolerance to recreational doses for a couple weeks, but do NOT underestimate your brain's capacity to maintain homeostasis. I'm guessing klownz probably wouldn't be getting super tolerant to his four 7.5 mg hydrocodones a day, given my own personal experience with taking six, if he's using it for some sort of pain condition.

To klownz: If you're gonna be taking this shit for chronic pain, see if you can't get involved with a great pain doctor who can watch you closely and give you something different, like methadone or Levorphanol (my personal favorite - you barely notice it's there) and don't fuck around with your medication recreationally.

OP: Let me reiterate: You say you have trouble not using if you have them on hand. Are you the kind of guy who would go out and find more if you ran out? I do truly understand the appeal of the opioids, but there are better ways.

You're already addicted if your taking them everyday and find it hard not to, quit for atleast 2 months and then if you really decide yyou want to do them again then don't take them every day, or even every three days

Wow, thanks for the tips guys, I am getting a little scared after the past week or so, and now even more after reading your posts. I have been taking something every night as I was saying, but lately it's been like I'm starting to feel shitty during the day and cant wait to take the opiate in the evening, whether it be Oxy or Hydro. That can't be good if I start to feel shitty untill I take the damn drug. I have to just take a while off period, plain and simple. As hard as I'm sure it's going to be. Maybe in the future I will take 1 or 2 times a week at the most but never like I have been doing that's for sure. Thanks for the advice guys...INFLUENCER

"Good luck, it's a slippery slope and while it's fun going down, it's not fun once you reach the bottom." Word..

I ate about 12-13 7.5/325 hydro's awhile ago when I was dopesick, expected to get fucked up but just wasn't sick anymore, had a heavy iv H habit for ove a year, I don't even understand how you feel 30 mg.. Trying the every other day/2 days a week thing now after a 6 day hiatus, I got over the physical wd's with suboxone but I still thought about dope all day and when I'd get to do it again. The suboxone helps in cheating the wd's, between that and taking breaks its prolly the best way to keep from getting really addicted.

i barely have a tolerance to opaites but i've been self medicating with them the past few days... only dihydrocodeine but that's enough for me.

know it's a bad idea to start at all... i don't intend to continue. but i've got a "don't care" attitude atm :( bad

Sounds like a good limit, but don't make it 3 times a week, and if you do do 2 days a week instead of 1 or less then don't have the two days be the weekend or else you'll soon find that you've decided to increase your limit.

Also there's other drugs out there to get paperwork and such done, e.g., amphetamines, which are not addicted when taken orally.

GOOD LUCK MATE :)
