What are some tips you guys have/konw to keep from developing a dependance to opiates? I switch off Hydrocodone and Oxy's, those are to two I like and can usually get. Ideally I like to dose up once in the evening, mainly to relax and do paperwork, watch a movie exc. I don't try to get really messed up (no interest in nodding off, or losing focus), I like these drugs because they make me focus more on my work, exc. and make it more enjoyable. My average dose is about 20-30mg oxy or about 30mg hydrocodone. I like the whole grapefruit juice thing to keep my tolorance down. My problem is I find it hard to skip a night if I have anything on hand.
My question is, if I only dose once in the evening, 5 or 6 nights a week and try to stay away from for the most part: using during the day, re-dosing, upping my mg's much per dose should I be pretty cool from developing any type of problematic dependence?
By the way overall I am a pretty smart, strong willed, healthy person. I really don't have an addictive personality. I just want to be safe and know as much a possible. Thanks you very much for your help bro's...Influencer

Something that helps me is a 1 day on, two day off rule. Pretty self explanatory.

That will only prevent physical addiction, psychological addiction can exist after taking it once, due to the amazingness of the high. If you get into a situation in which you have unlimited (or what you think are unlimited) funds, addiction will come swift and hard.

And why ask vets for help, surely you want docs instead (unless there's something you'rre not telling us)

As to the question posed, the two posters above have given the only sure fire way of not becoming addicted to opiates

I think he meant veteran opiate users when he said "Vets". Anyway, as others have said, the best way to avoid opiate addiction is to not take them. Short of that, you can't dose every day and expect to avoid dependance. If you insist on dosing every day, make sure your supply is such that you can taper your dose once you're ready to get off, or when your supply is running low.

Good luck, you're on a slippery slope at the moment.

Yes sir, it's as simple as just doing a taper, to get off them, maybe go to re-hab?

If it's a harsh habbit then take the re-hab option.....

But yeah simply put, just quit.

My advice would be to use only around 2 times a week.

Like CT said, if you use daily, even once a day, tolerance and addiction will creep up on you.

It may be hard to use only twice a week, especially if you've been addicted before, but it can be done. Try to use only on the weekend, and treat it as a "reward."

Using it to help you out in work, or to get other tasks done, isn't a good idea. Over time, you'll only want to perform those things while under the influence. I've known quite a few people that got addicted like that.

Oh, and stay away from iv'ing.

using an enzyme inhibitor like grapefruit juice or cimetidine won't reduce tolerance build-up, because it's just increasing the amount of time the drug is in your system, which would actually make tolerance build a little faster

to potentiate in a way that u can use less, and also to reduce tolerance build up a little, use a different kind of drug in combo with the opiate-- an antihistamine like diphenhydramine or a benzo like klonopin/valium/xanax

word +1

opiates are addictive. it is in their nature, you can only go so long with out your bodies tolerance going up thus requiring more drugs for the same effect. dont get me wrong, you can chip for a while, but sooner or later it grabs you.

as allready mentioned you can not avoid dependance if you are useing every day .

the best way to avoid getting hooked is to only use two days per week they can be consecutive days but then you will have to take a break for 4 or 5 days

if you use this method tolerance will still creep up but it will take a lot longer

you should be able to avoid physical withdrawel i do not know of a way to avoid psychological withdrawel

you should force your self to take breaks the more the better

if you are diligent in managing your use you will be able to enjoy useing for longer without having to step up your dose

to sum it up there is not a way to use daily without getting hooked even every other day will end upcaauseing trouble if you can use only once every third day
you should be good to go

be carfull my friend it is a truly slippery slope you are on, nobody sets out to get hooked it just creeps up on you before you know it

yeah i think u need to do your rip for a few day, see how u fair. i think by then ur have a definitive answer to if ur addicted or not, and know enough info to make an informed choice.
if u do 3-4 days without, why not carry on.?

The standard rule is if that if you can use for 1 day and not use for 2 days, and at least follow that use pattern then you can avoid physical withdrawal. Using and trying to avoid addiction tests your psychological willpower and it's hard not to give in to your cravings and desire to be high daily. The, "use 1 day, skip 2" trick holds true for most opioids, but not all. With certain longer lasting drugs like methadone you could probably still experience withdrawal from using just a few times per week.

sonic makes a good point and once again proves how knowledgable he is

drugs with long half lifes take so much longer to clear your body

that one day on two days off rule wont work with methadone

to make it more clear you need two days without drugs in your system for everyday you use to have any hopes of avoiding withdrawel and addiction

I was in a similar spot a few years ago thanks to an ex. I would only use at night/after work because I valued my day job.

I would usually use 2 nights in a row and take a night or two off. If I used for more than 2 nights, or more than 1x per night, like all day on weekends, I would find myself getting sick when I took the night off.

Good luck, it's a slippery slope and while it's fun going down, it's not fun once you reach the bottom.

There's really nothing that will stop you to getting addicted to them other than abstaining from them completely or not having access to a study supply. Opiates simply make people feel too good to handle, sure you can keep it at bay for a while at first but eventually you'll start taking them heavily.

I know this is kind of a useless answer, but self-control and infrequent use works for me.
