Help Needed. My 9 year Old child is depressed

I think around 16 should be the age to prescribed anything addictive (including SSRI's). At 16 I reached a low enough dose to quit risperidone (1mg to .25mg), I was able to recognize that it had bad side effects and made me feel awful. However I am now stuck on Effexor.

But if they truly need the Lexapro you should give it a try.

I want to thank all who helped me with their invaluable inputs. I think, or I hope my son is on the recovery stage as he is no longer afraid of speaking about school. He promised me from tomorrow on, he will be going to school.

Actually, I did not give him the medications as prescribed by the doc. 10mg of Lexapro was a lot for him, so I split it into two and gave him only half of it. (5mg). Besides, I reduced his Klonopin to 0.125 mg. He is okay with it, and most probably, I will stop it in less than a week.

His improvement was almost dramatic (like the improvement I had from my first episode of depression. I was severely depressed and prescribed Elavil 75mg (amitriptyline) at that period. It did nothing to me in the first week but after ten days or so, I had a dramatic improvement).

That’s why I doubt my child was depressed. He had a lot of obsessive thoughts and crying spells, but not anymore. Just mentioning “school” was enough to dim him but not anymore. The improvement happened after three weeks on 5mg of Lexapro. This is why I think his recovery can be attributed to Lexapro he has been taking.
Time only will say whether I am right or not. But I wish to keep him on Lexapro for another couple of weeks before splitting the dose again into half to make it 2.5mg daily for another week and NO drug afterwards.

Let me try. All I need now is to see how he is going to perform in school from tomorrow onwards.

Regards to all,
Ec

Klonopin: Take him off it. Unless he has panic attacks its a bullshit thing to prescribe someone with depression, im actually outraged someone would give a 9 year old boy an addictive prescription!!

So, what is adderall to you? Non-addictive? That is the most outrageous thing I ever heard...

that does of lexapro is too high for a child. 5mg is the pediatric dose. i took 10mg and im a 30yr old man.

the klonopin dose is definetly low enough for a child but i dont think he needs that. the lexapro has an anxiolytic effect in itself.

i would start him with a liquid suspension of 2.5mg lexapro and see if he even needs 5mg. use the klonopin for anxiety for the first month BEFORE the lexapro kicks in. thats the only use i could fathom for it in a child.

That is the reason for the klonopin in the first place. It is there to prevent the anxiety the lexapro can cause at the beginning of the treatment.

This is standard practice.

OP, it sounds like your 9 yr old is the boss of your household instead of you. sounds like he is adept at manipulation and is playing you for a fool. kids go to school. parents go to work and manage the household. how did things go so off the rails that you are allowing a 9 yr old to essentially hold you hostage?
time to get a grip and start leading your family again.

im sorry tho hear this. i think what you should do is keep him off the meds. hes only 9 years old and shame on that doctor for giving him medicine like that at such a young age. what you could do is take him out of school and have him take his schooling online. i went through this same thing but at 17 and i took my classes online and now im in college doing fine.

Doctors do have different meds for these occasions.

Does your child have ADD? I thing that he is just frustrated at the fact that he may not be able to concentrate at school. Which is known to make kids depressed at a very early age.
