What's going on guys? I haven't been on here since I got off heroin a year ago, but I used to post on here all the time for years. I used to have a pretty nasty little heroin habit. I got into some trouble and it seemed like the best solution for me was to enter an outpatient methadone clinic here in New York.

I was signed up to be there short term. it was a three month thing. one month building my dose up, one month stable, one month getting off. Three months in, I started getting sick. My dose wasn't holding me so they kept increasing my dose. One day, I was so sick I was throwing up on the way into the clinic. They asked me to sign a pile of papers before they'd dose me. I didn't even care what it said bc they were holding a medicine I took every morning over my head until i did it. I ended up getting on long-term methadone treatment instead of my planned three months thanks to that pile of paperwork.

Now fastfoward 13 months. I haven't used heroin in over a year. Every single day I wake up with chills, sweats, abdominal pain, my skin in hypertension mode, throwing up, shitting bricks just plain old misery. EVERY SINGLE MORNING. I tried to get medical help from my doctor, he told me any methadone related illness needs to be handled by the clinic doctor. The clinic doctor tells me he's not allowed to prescribe anything other than methadone in that clinic and that I need to go to the Emergency Room when I'm like that.

Thanks to lack of health insurance i've racked up about ~$21,000 dollars in emergency room bills just in the last 6 months. I'm 23 years old and this is ruining me. I've gone to the ER about 5 times, maybe 6 and now the emergency rooms doctors are at the point where they are refusing to treat me for any methadone related illness.

Now the worst part is, since I started getting a little unstable, my clinic took away all of my take-home bottles and since Aug. they've been forcing me to go to the clinic 7 days a week. They open at 7am Monday-Friday and on weekends they're open at 8. Since I usually wake up with my head in a toilet barfing my brains out at about 6:30, that usually fucks me on the weekends bc I have to wait for them to open.

I also have to drive while in methadone withdraws, every single day 15 miles each way to the clinic, EVERY SINGLE MOTHERFUCKING DAY!!!!!11

My methadone clinic has a policy where they control who gets what take home bottles. I mean there are rules and regulations on how to get to the point where you can take this liquid outside the clinic and theres a three month waiting period to get to one bottle, another two months and then you have two bottles of ur dose, etc..

Every single time I get close to getting a bottle, they screw me. Last time they told me my urine drug test came back negative for methadone and that's the reason I need to wait another three months to get it. They told me a negative for methadone drug test is the same as a positive for drugs drug test to them. I asked them how it was physically possible for that to happen since I take the fuggin dose infront of them every single day.

They think im trying to cheat the system somehow and because of that, i'm suffering on a daily basis. I've been decreasing my dose by 2-3mgs every other week or maybe once a month or whenever I feel stable so I can actually function.

Now the hospital won't treat me, no doctor will go near me since any methadone related illness needs to be treated by the methadone clinic, and my methadone clinic told me that if I go in there sick and I throw up in that clinic one more time they're going to discharge me and tell me to take a hike. No detox, no nothing.

I'm on supervised probation for a felony conviction and i'm on probation until october or december if all goes to plan. I tried to get ibogaine before I started probation but when I reached the Canadian boarder, I was told they don't allow felons into their country with out a shit ton of documentation. Now that I'm on probation, I can't even leave the county so I don't know how i'd get to an ibogaine clinic.

The local inpatient rehabs have told me I need to be down to 40-45mgs of methadone before they'll admit me. I'm simply on too high of a dose for them to successfully detox me. I was on 140mgs and now i'm down to 65mgs.

I'm on my own in NY so I have to drive my car (or my crotch rocket depending on weather) every single morning to this clinic which is pretty difficult considering im throwing up in a bag every few minutes. It seems like methadone is only holding me for 18-22hrs instead of the advertised 24-48hrs. If I get discharged from this place while im in this condition, im really, really screwed.

What can I do? I feel trapped and alone. :( :( What my clinic is doing to me can not be legal. Driving in that condition on a daily basis is going to get me killed, especially since there's been like a foot of snow falling from the sky every day. Please, anyone, help! I can't get any relief, i've been like this for months and it isn't getting better. If I was addicted to heroin it would be so much easier to get off that shit than this.

Any United States methadone experts out there, please help me! I don't know what else to do! This is really cruel and unusual. They don't even give me bottles knowing the next morning will have two feet of snow and ice and shit on the ground. They don't care about me at all to them i'm just a number, an annoying number if that.

Anyone?

I think you should really look into switching over to Suboxone. The biggest plus about subs is that you will get a prescription for weeks-months at a time. In my experience the doctor even over-prescribed me by prescribing a larger dose than needed and now i'm sitting on a months worth of "extra" pills.

The only thing I could see causing a problem is the actual switch from Methadone to Suboxone. You need to allow the 'Done to leave your body so your looking at a couple days of withdrawals before you can take the subs.

In the long run it will be worth it man. Suboxone is a miracle drug. Even though I'm sick of it and want to be off of it completely, it has really worked wonders for me at only 4mg a day (I'm prescribed 20mg/day).

Good luck

If methadones not holiding him suboxone has no chance of working. Sounds like you are a rapid metabolizer of methadone some people have success by splitting there dose and dosing twice a day see if your clinic will allow that. Otherwise its time to detox or switch clinincs.

That sucks man, I really feel for ya. Your clinic sounds like a bunch of Nazis.. The clinic I go to here in NJ sounds like it is literally the complete opposite of the situation you described, and i couldn't be happier with my situation. I would HIGHLY suggets contacting your state methadone authority and describing exactly what you told us. They are usually more than helpful when it comes to the mistreatment of methadone patients, not abiding by the regulations, etc. I forget the website off hand but just search for NY methadone adv ocates or authority or something along those lines.

You deserve MUCH better than that, man.

On another not, have you ever considered suboxone therapy? Or just lying about your dose to a rehab in order to get into an inpatietent program/.

I really want to help you man, you are more than welcome to PM me to chat further or in more detail, as I have to leave my house for a little bit,

Regardless, I wish you the best of luck and hope to GOD that you can get this crooked clinic to fucking straighten up and stop treating their clinics like fucking garbage. It's completely unfair to you.

Methadone can be a complete lifesaver if the medicine and program are used the right way, and it is up to the clinic to implement the proper techniques and guidelines and rules in order for the patient to have maximum succees.

Hey if u shouldnt be driving, they should get u transportation.

I just got my license suspended in NJ bc of a methadone related accident. My dose was too high, I knew it, but they couldn't lower me in time. I'd just nod out randomly throughout the day.

Get on medicaid, call a lawyer. i don't want u to get into an accident.
Felonies are a bitch...esp if u have one already.

If I involve a lawyer or bring more trouble their way, they're just going to discharge me I know it. According to them they don't have to detox me either before discharging me. The closest clinic after this one is like 30 miles each way. I'd never make it there in the morning.

start taking DLPA...2 grams a day. i use dope and just recently got prescirbed oc's for a chronic pain condition. of course, they are practically ineffective since my tolerance is high. Well, I've been doing some research on tolerance and NMDA antagonists like calcium/magnesium combined with dl-phenylalanine (DLPA) are drastically reducing my tolerance in a span of several days. I'm now getting proper pain relief from just one 15mg time-release oxycontin after 4 days on this regimen. I'm in disbelief about the huge reduction in tolerance so I'm going to continue my regimen for a couple more weeks and then maybe post a thread about it.

fyi - i started the oc's after 8 days clean from dope.

Maybe try to jump off to bupe. Or you may have to go to a different, shorter acting full-agonist for a week or two which would enable you torapid taper and get on bupe.

good luck man.

Not necessarily. Buprenorphine metabolism is different to methadone, involving less CYP450 isoenzymes then methadone metabolism does. Buprenorphine could possibly work for him.

OP, have you tried using potentiators to extend the half-life? Grape fruit juice, cimetidine?

I had the same problem with methadone. I would wake up in withdrawals every fucking morning and just feel OFF (though I can't say it was as bad as your situation, which might be partially from moving down from 145mg to where you are at now). I would be on the virge of dry heaving, but 90% of the time I could dose before I reached that point. Not to mention trying to follow all their dumb ass rules.

I switched back to buprenorphine..and it worked great, well great in the sense of another opiate holding me. He's on 65mg methadone...IMO if he waits long enough between his last methadone dose and first bupe dose its guaranteed to "work." It might not help with cravings but I don't see a reason he couldn't switch over and be held. It will probably take 2 weeks to feel good mentally and physically (at the most). Honestly, they are two different drugs. Just becuase he metabolized methadone really quick doesn't mean he will be in the same boat with bupe.

I switched to sub from 80mg methadone, which I was only on for 9 months, did dope for 4 days, waited 36 hours, and had a painless switch. I mean it wasn't pleasant but there were absolutely no precipitated withdrawals. My doctor said he switched people from as high as 160mg..who knows if thats true though. I have read on BL people switching from around 100 many times though.

The grass is always greener on the other side..while the methadone WAS active in my system, I felt a LOT better than I do on sub, but being able to dose whenever you want with sub is nice. You don't have to deal with withdrawals and the clinic rules. It is however a lot easier to use, you do not have the structure of a program, with drug testing, motive to stay clean (takehomes), etc..

I was a lot "cleaner" on methadone, but even though I am using now, I have to say I feel less trapped than I did when I was very physically dependant on done. Too bad there is no in between. Methadone would be perfect IMO if it held you longer. That is the main reason I really didn't like it. By the time I was 12 hours in I felt like I went from being a normal sociable person to someone who just wanted to be alone, at home.

If I had the choice, I would get prescribed my 80mg methadone from a private doctor, and dose 40mg every 12 hours. That is really the only way I could see methadone working for me..a split dose. That might be an option at your clinic, but who really wants to drive and go through that shit TWICE a day. 7 days a week is fucking bad enough.

I understand inpatient rehab facilities declining entry if you're on that high of a dose of methadone, but what about detoxification centers (generally in hospitals)? They'll usually do fast tapers utilizing a number of medications on top of the bupe or methadone to minimize discomfort.

Bupe never held me worth shit when I did heroin, how the hell could it possibly work with methadone? I haven't tried any bupe since I got on this shit, i'm kind of afraid to since I don't know how i'll physically react while on my dose of methadone (it could make shit a lot worse?)

Being on methadone for over a year and the dose i'm on, ive been told it would be atleast 30-60 days in an inpatient rehab to get off this shit. I met a woman passing through my drug education class. She was in inpatient detox for 17 weeks sweating this shit in the worst hell she's ever gone through.

And for anyone that's never been through what i'm talking about, heroin withdraw was a sunny day in the park compared to methadone withdraw. Methadone w/d if not treated correctly can be fatal. This shit really is life or death for me. I could do heroin withdraw on my head smoking a cigg compared to this shit.

This shit, coming from a ~$1000USD/week heroin habit is easily 10x more severe than any heroin w/d I ever went through, ever, but that's only after not getting dosed for 1 day, luckily as long as I make it within an hr of waking up my health complications are only so bad. You know, sticking my head into a fucking plastic bag while driving to puke my guts up every few seconds bad, but not laying dead in the gutter bad.

I've never tried to potentiate methadone with grapefruit juice or that other stuff but when I was waiting to get on probation, I did smoke some delicious ganja or hash to settle my stomach before making the trip to the clinic or before bed. That shit helped 100x more than anything i'm trying now.

My clinic has informed me on several occasions that they WILL NOT dose me on my daily methadone if I enter the clinic while "throwing-up" sick. They refuse to further complicate any health conditions I could have which is what they say right before they tell me to GET THE FUCK OUT with out getting dosed. Even if I had a million things to do that day, you know daily errands, work, college, anything and my throwing up is due to lack of methadone in my body, they still won't give me methadone to help me. They literally kick me out and tell me to go to the hospital every, single time. The hospital has been charging me on average $2000-6000USD per visit. I've actually left my clinic in an abulence just to get Zophran (spelling?) and methadone liquid in the emergency room, costing me almost $7,000 dollars for something my clinic does every single morning. Once they get me my dose, the shakes stopped, the puking stopped, the sweating stops, the pain stops, it all just calms down and I literally feel fine within 30 seconds.

Unfortunately, since I've had the exact same treatment in the ER, same medication, same everything so many times, the only hospital near my clinic is starting to believe that I am playing them for drugs or something. Last monday i walked in there crying in pain, hunched over grabbing my stomach and they literally wasted 4 hrs of my time leaving me in an empty ER room until some LEAVE YOUR RACISM OUT came in and told me there's nothing they can do for me for methadone related-illnesses. I broke down. I started to cry, I told that fuck to drop dead and I walked out. I called up my old dope dealer and bought 10 10mg tabs of methadone, crushed them bitches up, dropped it in a drink and within minutes of ingest I was fine.

It's a rare occurrance when I can get this shit on the street so if that didn't go down idk where i'd be now. My probation officer is pretty far up my ass too and according to her, "getting me off methadone is not a priority to her".

I've had catscans, I've had bloodwork done, i've had xrays. Every fucking test in the book at that hospital. The clinic has all my records. They know every single time i've been sick, other than getting dosed with methadone I am as healthy as an ox. There's no way I'd have something wrong with me within weeks of a cat scan or blood work, especially when things have been going like this, and they even know im going through this.

I feel their practices are unprofessional, and possibly criminal but how the fuck could I ever prove that? It is the methadone clinic's word against the word of a methadone junkie that THEY got hooked.

EDIT:

Wouldn't a potentiator also do more harm than good? When I was smoking weed on methadone, it intensified the methadone but it also intensified the next morning withdraw symptoms by a lot.

Also, I'm not really looking for support and hugs. I was really looking for people who know more about methadone than me because as anyone can tell from this thread im getting to the end of my ropes here. this daily sick shit has to stop

It may not have held you when you were on dope becuase you did not wait long enough to dose your bupe / did not give your body enough time to adjust to the bupe once making the switch

^ Agreed. Methadone barely held me for 24 hours when I was on it - around 18 at best - but bupe held me perfectly and did so for up to three or four days if I skipped doses. It really is pretty damn close to being a miracle drug for some - not all I know but definitely for some no matter how heavy the habit. Only problem is you'd probably need to taper the meth down a tad before making the switch. At least that's what I had to do when on a similar 'done script. It made such an incredible difference to me it's untrue. Stuff's a lifesaver and way better to maintain/taper than methadone ever was for me and for many others. I'd definitely recommend giving it a second chance to see if you are one of those others.

I'm sorry I have no real advice to give you since I don't know anything about clincs and getting on subs and bupe and methadone.

BUT

your story sounds terrible and the things you have to go through at your age of 23. I really hope you solve this problem soon and are able to get back on track. Once you do, I really suggest you go to IOP's, substance abuse programs, NA, and schools and be a public speaker on how drastically dope can affect someones lives within such a short time and early in life. Like you owe 23k and your only 23. Stuff like that, i hope you get better and can help peope get better

same problem with me , i was in a closed clinic goiin off heroin with methadone , reucing the dose every day.....i took my dose at about 8 in the morning , at 9pm i get withdrawl......methadone sucks , in my opinion bupe is best , because with bupe i dint even feel the reducin until 2mg and less , and that from 16mg at the start. meaning from 16 to 2mg in 2 weeks i felt no withdrawl!! first symptoms appearing after 2mgs and less....

I thought this situation would eventually stabalize but unfortunately its just gotten worse and worse. I mean if you stick to one dose of methadone for so long, your body eventually adjusts to it (or so i thought). I've gone down 10mgs in two months and i can't take this shit anymore. I asked my clinic to raise me 2mgs today.

According to the methadone clinic, here are my options:

*Detox down to 45mgs and enter an inpatient rehab for months and months and hope they can get me off this shit.

*Wait until i'm off probation to enter Canada or Mexico for Ibogaine detox.

*Continue to drop 1mg every other week and be on this shit for another year or two.

*Bring my .38 to the methadone clinic, fire a warning shot through their nurse station and rob them of all the methadone in the clinic. That way I can taper off this trash myself. (you have no idea how many times ive fantasized this).

I really don't think bupe is going to be able to hold me coming from this methadone addiction. I haven't taken any bupe of any sort since I got on this trash so I really don't know. I'm afraid of what it'll do to me physically as every hospital in the area thinks im playing around.

Oh yeh, keep in mind i've had clean urine tests weekly since Feb 2010. They refuse to give me take home bottles and they continue to think im playing them somehow since im always sick. Whenever I throw up in the clinic, they always tell me that they aren't allowed to dose someone who is sick and I should just go to the Emergency Room. They don't even care that I've been to the ER so many times in the last 6 months because of this crap that i'm facing over $23,000USD+ in medical bills.

Please, anybody. I really need someone to just point me in the right direction. Just tell me where to go

Sounds like you could

Up your dose and see if u can get to an amount that will hold you

Try some potentiators to see if you can slow the metabolization of the. Done down to hold you for 24 hrs

SEE if SUBOXONE will work for you.

Or. Goto a different clinic.

Eather way you have to do something different or your gunna be stuck sick every morning.

You have to change something... :/

I was on a daily methadone script (similar doses to those you mention) for almost ten years and it did nothing but keep me addicted to methadone and feel shitty half the time. Switching to bupe was the difference between night and day. No more feeling like crap, easy to taper, addiction "beaten" completely two years later. Could have done it quicker than that but after such a lengthy addiction I wanted to take it slow. Good luck in whatever you choose to try :)
