my father gets about 4-5 hours sleep evry night. i told him next time he goes to the doc to get some 30mg restoril(temezapam). well there not really working. what can i tell him to ask for? halcion? what would be stronger than restoril? i thought this would surely work. he needs something stronger. any help much appreciated.

i can only speak from experience... but ambien always does the trick for me. call me old fashion but i like to take it to fall asleep :)

I have the SAME probeblem as your dad, for me it has been hopeless, but here are some medications he might want to ask his doctor about. And there are a LOT of things stronger then Temazepam, it just depends on how the patient responds to them! Everyone is differnt!
Halcion
Prosom
Meprobamate
Dalmane
Ambien
Sonata
VALIUM

i am no docter but i believe when sleeping with aid of an benzo youre only fighting the symptons and not the cause of his sleeping problems. so although it should help especially in the beginning it will only result in getting you hooked on benzos to without solving the problem.
try getting him to an docter specialized in sleeping disorders, they must be around.

i realize this emkee. we know that benzos are just a band aide to the problem. but for now, until he gets to a sleep specialist, he needs some sleep. i think he is going to ask for the 30mg's instead of the 15mg. thanx for the help.

I agree with emkee. If your father isn't sleeping as much as he feels he needs there is most likely a emotional phscological problem.
I just moved recently under unpleasent circumstances, and for the first week I was here I couldn't sleep for shit, ie not at all. So I started chopping wood. I know it sounds crazy but first thing in the morning I would drag my tired irritable self to the wood pile (I live deep in the northern wilderness so in the winter it isn't uncommon for single homes to go through 20-30 cords of wood, which is alot of frickin wood) Anyway, it got my mind off whatever was keeping me up at night and the physical work wore me out enough that I could sleep like a baby for 6 hours a night which is all I need.
I am not a doctor either, but I know from years of wrestling with a sleep disorder the most affective means of catching a few z's is engaging in some physical activity that gets your mind off your problems.
This is probably not the answer you are looking for but it works for me everytime.

well he works his ass off allday doing construction. i dont think the excersise will help him. he is very physical. we cant get him to relax, ever! he can work allday on 4 hours sleep.
thanx for the info. i appreciate it.

i have had problems with sleeping for the past year or so...TYLENOL PM usually works well for me, but lately there have been way more than a good share of mnights where i am up all night long and end up getting NO sleep, even with the aid of VALIUM and NYQUIL!!!might have to check out a doc here soon...
is that true(for the most part) that the root cause of people who have sleeping problems are from an emotional standpoint???just curious..
