Hello Bluelight!

Hello cyberspace.

It's been years since I've used Bluelight, and I think that this may be the first time that I've ever posted anything at all.

I was brought back here after a conversation with a friend led to the topic of Russian designer drugs, namely one called Krokodil. I came to Bluelight to see what info the forums had on it. But that's beside the point.

Happy to be back, Bluelight is a truly valuable resource on the Internet.

I am a grad student in SoCal. I have a fondness for the novels and stories of Philip K. Dick (hence my username) and enjoy the music of J. S. Bach.

Five favorite movies (off the top of my head):

Blade Runner
Robocop
Videodrome
Cure
Inland Empire

I like to run or hike in my spare time, and since I'm currently unemployed I have a lot of spare time. ;)

I plan on using Bluelight for research on the war on drugs, psychiatry + pharmaceutical companies, organizations like MAPS, alternative healing, health + wellness.

Hi there PK, I to am a big Phil fan.

I'm surprised not to see A Scanner Darkly on your list for me it's probably my favorite PKD book and the film almost does it justice, certainly far more so than Blade runner does for Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. That's not to say Blade Runners a bad film, the directors cut is one of my favorites as well.

Anyhow welcome from across the pond
 
haven't seen the film adaptation of Scanner Darkly in too long a time to consider it for a favs list, but i've been meaning to give it another go so i should do that soon.

i dig the PiL logo ;)

It wasn't that popular in his life time, but it did have a solid cult following. It was after the movie Blade Runner was made, based on his novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? that his writing went on the path to mass popularity. So why?

I can't give a solid answer. It's beyond anything one can put into words. He was a pulp sci-fi writer who uncovered the mystery of the cosmos, and his books are little philosophical puzzle boxes--Thomas Disch, a sci-fi contemporary of Dick's, said that his books were the literary equivalent of a drug trip. If not for Dick, there would be no movies like The Matrix or Inception or countless episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation like the one where Moriarty becomes self-aware in the holodeck and wants out.

Check out Scanner Darkly, UBIK or The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch if you're interested.

A Scanner Darkly is one of my favourite films, might watch it again now actually, I should read the books though too, thanks for re-inspiring me to do some actual reading. Gonna get onto amazon now.
