Heavy toll in Mexican drug war over weekend
MEXICO CITY, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's drug war has taken a heavy toll over the weekend as police found seven bodies dumped in a Mexico City suburb and 13 other people were killed.
The Ministry of Citizen Security said the seven bodies were found dumped in a street in Ecatepec, Mexico State. Some 11 people, including a soldier, were killed in separate incidents on Friday night.
Most of the dead were armed civilians, who were killed in clashes between authorities and criminal gangs in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, said the ministry.
Meanwhile, two sons of two prominent Mexican journalists were executed by gunmen early Saturday in the northern city of Chihuahua, officials said Sunday.
Journalists in Mexico are often targeted by drug cartels, but authorities said the two boys' deaths were unrelated to their parents' professions.
The Mexican government has recently unveiled a monument along Mexico City's main boulevard to pay tribute to over 70,000 victims of Mexico's war on drugs.
