Heavy cannabis use and your memory

Obviously, smoking cannabis affects a person's memory. The more you smoke, the worse your memory gets. However, I feel like it affects my memory a lot worse than most others. I smoke a lot of weed, several times a day, every day, and have for more or less the past 3 years. I understand this is a lot, however I smoke no more than the rest of my peer group. Not only I notice, but my friends and girlfriend all notice that I forget a lot.

Some people's memories are better than others, and mine never was above average. I was always bad with names, would forget what I did on Friday by the time Monday came around, etc.. However now that I smoke a lot of weed, my memory absolutely sucks. Does anyone else notice a severe effect on memory from smoking daily?

Captain Obvious made a pretty good point that smoking less weed will help :) so aside from that, what do you stoners do to help memory? What vitamins/supplements/foods are the best to help protect and improve memory? Yes, I searched and all that, got a couple generic lists of memory-helpers, but I want to hear it from the cannabis users.

Thanks!!

it may be another problem.....I've been smoking for over 40 years and I've never really had any memory problems...I guess it could be like anything else and effect people differently..

The hippocampus contains a large
abundance of cannabinoid
receptors. It is no wonder that 9-
THC would greatly affect this area
of the brain due to this fact.
However, there is more than one
pathway through which 9-THC
affects the hippocampus, which
lead one to believe that memory
loss undisputedly attributable to
the neurotoxicity of 9-THC.
A well-known pathway in this area
of neurotoxicity is the arachidonic
pathway. As mentioned previously
9-THC induces the release of
arachidonic acid through the PLA2
pathway. This increase in
arachidonic acid will then activate
the COX pathway and increase the
activation of ROS. Once ROS is
activated the peroxidation of the
various lipids, proteins and DNA will
cause the break down of the cell,
and eventually lead to cell death.
On a side note an experiment was
done to see the effects of
arachidonic acid on cultured
hippocampal neurons in rats. Within
24 hours of application of
arachidonic acid to the cultured
cells 100ell death was observed.
This however was not an accurate
model because the application of
arachidonic acid in this manner is
not likely the same as that caused
by the activation of PLA2 (Chan et
al 1998). In the same experiment
it was also found that vitamin E or
aspirin protects the cells from any
sort of neurotoxicity in regards to
this pathway. This pathway is
thought to be the main cause of cell
death within the hippocampus, and
therefore it is a good reason to
believe that marijuana ultimately
causes short-term memory loss.
In addition to this, marijuana has
also been known to interfere with
LTP. This is easily shown since 9-
THC inhibits the influx of calcium
through the inhibition of N- and Q-
type calcium channels. In the
hippocampus this leads to a lack of
LTP. A loss of LTP in the
hippocampus where memories are
formed would prove to be an
accurate assessment of the fact
that marijuana causes loss of short-
term memory.

i think you just have a bad memory man and theres nothing really you can do.

im lucky in that ive always had a good memory even while smoking day in and day out for years. The girl i was with during the years i blazed constantly would always forget everything too though.

it is what it is.

It's pretty safe to say my memory sucks with or without weed, however I'm sure there's some kind of supplement or vitamin that helps one's memory.

Look up piracetam, when I preload with it a few days before I roll, I find it clears the weed fog and my recall goes way up!

I find it has adverse effects on the way I remember events, particularly the order in which they happened. I will recall all the events of the past few days, but I'll find myself thinking "Was it yesterday? Or the day before?"

Regardless, I was happy to find that I passed all my exams quite easily even though I've pretty much been toking all day, every day for 5 months, so I guess my memory isn't completely shot to shit.=D

my memory is quite selective - i can easily remember lots that interests me and very little that doesn't

but i also used to abuse alcohol and cannabis in teen years (stopped since) and that definitely didn't help memory

For some reason, it seems like smoking weed doesn't affect my memory that much. I'm not an heavy smoker thought. I once studied an exam while i was high, and I had pretty good results ;)

this happens to me you just gotta make sure you sleep a lot sleep is key and drink lots of water all day and eat solid meals at the normal time. Maybe quit smoking for a week or two?

i have looked back and i dont remember anything of high school. like 3 years just gone... and the summers are even worse. you cant get those memories back :(

stimulants kinda help cuz they make you less stupid-stoned. omega 3 fish oil stuff helps a tad.

i find only within a space of 2 days since i last smoked is my memory bad . after it just gets better again .

dude i feel you, my short term memory literally isn't there anymore, it really scares me sometimes. I can't remember shit! everything just blends together. I remember what I was doing, who I was with, where I was, but i don't remember details at all. It's all just a vague outline. Seriously, when I try to think of what I did last night or yesterday it doesn't just come to me, I have to make a concious effort to remember everything I did. Like remembering a dream almost.

What I have found is that my memories are still all there, I just seem to have lost the ability to recall these for myself normally.

For example, I feel kind of the same in the way that I do not really remember any of my years in high school as I was also smoking Waterfalls, or Buckets as we call them every day.

However, if a friend of mine starts to tell a story or recalls something, its like OH S*** I REMEMBER THAT!! and it all comes flooding back.

Also time lines and the order of events can get very confusing. What year did that happen? No clue...

However, I have an awesome memory when it comes to Numbers, be it IP Addresses, phone numbers, account numbers, etc.

I have been smoking for about 13 years and heavily (3 times a day min) for about 5.

Edit: Another thing I have noticed, is that once a friends has helped me recall a forgotten memory from the past that I thought was lost... then it seems to stick with me again forever and I can recall that myself. Kinda weird..
