I don't mean to step on your toes tripman but please as a final HR note to all as this has been a very hot topic (no pun intended) as of late.
As tripman said with both experience and verifiable information, under most circumstances in the USA you do not heat heroin. Especially not powder heroin, but not tar either.
By heating tar, you introduce all the contaminates, cuts, and probably degrade the active ingredient a little bit while allowing all the precipitate matter to join the solution. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE LEFT WITH VISIBLE "tar" IN YOUR SPOON, ALL THE HEROIN HAS GONE INTO THE WATER, TRUST ME. This is only difference between a hot shot and cold shot of heroin, hot shots DO NOT get you higher, try it, you'll see.
This is what you do:
-You never use heat to prep tar heroin, you use the sterile end of your syringe's plunger (rinsed first in isopropyl to re-sterilize, something I recommend every time you open a new rig even though they are sterile.
This may be overkill but better safe than sorry.)
-Just mash the tar for like 30 seconds to a minute tops in the coldest clean water you can get, (ideally bacteriostatic saline or water stored properly in the refrigerator will be cold enough), although honestly only you only need to mash it once or twice, because This will release 99% of the active ingredient: heroin, call the <1% a loss, you won't notice the difference. Micron filter, and swab w/ isopropyl your injection site and (I also dip the needle tip again in a fresh isopropyl alcohol source, overkill maybe) then it's ready to go
