Heart palpitations after codeine

I've been taking codeine several times per day for the last three years and occasionally over the last 6 months I've been having Palpitations about 3 hours after dosing. The feeling is like a fluttering in the chest thy normally lasts a couple of seconds and make me want to cough to try to rectify for some reason. The other day however I had the worst attack of my life, the fluttering kept on for about 10 seconds then my heart was racing for a minute or so before finally calming down. I have now decided to taper off my codeine addiction as I genuinely thought I was dying.

Has anyone else had any experience of this? It only seems to happen when in the afterglow of a codeine high. Sometimes I don't get the fluttering but do get a pressure in my neck, almost like my heart is straining. The majority of days I can take as much codeine as I like with absolutely no adverse effects so I'm confused as to what it could be. I don't think it is anxiety as it always strikes when I'm relaxed and least expecting it.
 
It might not have anything to do with the codeine. I also get strange palpitations every once in a while and I do take opiates. Not sure of the connection though because I've gotten them when I haven't taken opiates. Go to the Dr. and get them checked out. It could be nothing or you could have some form of valve problem.
 
It's definitely related to the codeine, just seems to happen in cycles. I'll be fine
for a couple of months and then every time I take codeine for the next two weeks or so, I will feel the tightness and will get the odd palpitation. After these two weeks or so, I will be fine again for the next few weeks before the cycle continues.
 
Well, you're in the UK- right? Health care is free- IMHO you should just go get it checked out. That's always the best idea. Be glad you don't live here in the US where such precautionary measures are beyond my reach because of lack of insurance. Ughhhh
 
Yep free healthcare, thank god! I have been once before when I had the tightness in the neck, the DR took my blood pressure, listened to my chest and told me that all was normal.
 
OK- well I also have often though for myself in oxycodone brings on palpitations for myself. I' just not sure either way..
