Hearing loss from opiates?

9mmCensor said:
dont shove pills in your ears.

lmao!

As long as it is only occurring when you are high, I wouldn't worry that much. Unless of course, you're ALWAYS on opiates and have this problem and it won't go away upon cessation of use. In that case, I would talk to a doctor. I love music too much for a drug to cause hearling loss (which I haven't heard of with opiates IME.)

I am so glad I found this thread because I thought I was the only one. I am not always on opiates but sometimes when I use, I notice the "whoosing" and such within my inner ear.

Didn't Rush Limbaugh overdose on oxycontin and lose hearing in one ear?

I have almost permanently ringing ears but doesnt really bother me anymore

oh and im off the opiates , poppy tea gave me this worst and on dope i hardly ever noticed it

My ears, especially my left one, gets this pressure feeling inside of it and sounds seam muffled. Sometimes I get a bad pain in it also.
But it's been happening for a while and I just started doing some OCs this week.
I would suggest getting your hearing checked.
Also you can go to doc and a nurse can shoot saline into your ear with a weird syringe. You may just have some wax build up, which usually occurs worse and more often in guys since we have short hair and when we get it cut the hair can get into your ear and attach to the wax causing the build up.

If you're really that concerned then stop using. That would be the only way to maybe tell if that's whats causing it and if it is to stop it from getting worse.
Good luck!

Not sure how reliable this is but....

Also it seams Rush was on Vicodin AND Oxy so the vike might have caused the hearing loss he has.
But the article also says that Oxycontin has been linked to hearing loss, but also NSAIDS, so vicodin might be a double wammy with APAP and hydrocodone in it, both being linked to hearing loss.

Kind of scary shit tho...guh

Another more reliable report...

If you google opiate related hearing loss a lot of hits come back with some good info.

Lacey I get the same thing as you my hearing seems like it is slowly going down hill since I have been on opiates.

I took like 40mg of methadone last night for example and then when I woke up this morning I have that wooshing sound going on and everything sounds dull.

Well, opiates increase cranial pressure and if you are snorting stuff it will cause damage to your whole sinus cavity - nose/ears/eyes

^Yes but I doubt thats the main cause of the hearing loss.
If you read my second link its thought that it's a mixture of certain people's genetics and the metabolized enzymes from the opiate that can cause sensorinueral hearing loss, not pressure.

But that's just my interpretation of it.

I too experience the whooshing/pressure in my ear when using opiates/opioids. Its not usually that unpleasant and is gone once they wear off. edit - this occurs with standard oral dosing

I also get hiccups while on them oddly enough.

^I know what you mean with the hiccups. I get them sometimes while on high doses of opiates. But usually when I'm feeling dope sick, I think kind of like a precursor to puking. For me at least. But a nice sign that I need to lay down and try to lower my body temperature.

I have something odd happen back when i was blowing alot of oxy before i got a steady prescription , i noticed that during the night my ears would secrete a very clear fluid not wax but it was still a lil sticky like wax .. i would get ringing in the ears alot and it would be painful to qtip my ears , in the morning i would have a small deafening effect upon waking that would last a hour or two until the ear drained ...

but once i got onto a steady prescription monitored by a doctor and i wasnt sniffing it i noticed it went away in about 2-3 days and if i had happend to snort some out of surplus of medication i notice it would come back almost immediatley .. but i never let it concern me as it always went away and my hearing would come back super clear just like its always been ..

if it keeps getting worse i would have a doc take a look that one guy is right i know my one friend had that thing where wax can build up close to the ear drum and is not reachable by a q-tip . its a simple procedure and doesnt hurt they just flush the ear out with saline .

my 0.02

It also increases inner-ear pressure. I know that is true for sure with hydrocodone, but likely most all opiates. Also what Lighttrailz said it happens to my S/O all the time. She stops snorting it and her hearing comes back. She has bad hearing to begin with, but it makes her almost completely deaf when she does it.

I've noticed over the past week since I've had a supply of 80mg OC and been doing some almost every day that if I snort a good amount I also get a type of runny liquid in my ears and will q-tip them out but they clog right back up. It's worse when I get water into it in the shower it can last all day and feel like I'm constantly getting plane ear when the air pressure gets higher than you're used to and you have to pop them by plugging your nose and mouth, but even doing that doesn't help.

I think the snorting causes mucus to build up in your sinuses and that in turn backs up into your ear canal causing them to block up, so after a few days when your nasal passage has a chance to clear up your ear canal clears out also. Aren't the ear canal and nasal passage connected in some way?

Everyone once in a while I think opiates are fucking with my vision. Then I just realize im noddin too hard and when I get sober it gets back to normal. But i have had some nights where I SWORE I was going blind.

Ugh this crap really freaks me out, I had no idea such side effects were possible with hydrocodone and oxycodone

I actually have this happening too.
I told my doctor about it and he said that extended use (and abuse) of most opiates (the codones especially) will cause this, but ONLY while you're on it and during withdrawal. After it's all out of your system, the problem should subside.

Lacey,

I had the same symptoms you descibe after the first time I took ecstasy. For me it lasted 8-12 months, but I'm still left with some hearing abnormalities. Like the whooshing sound you mentioned and the feeling of pressure. I have more or less got used to those now as my 1st ecstasy experience was over 10 years ago.

The only other additional symptom I had that i think you didnt mention was balance problems when the whooshing would start, but I dont have that anymore. Just the sounds on their own. Ive been to an ENT specialist and they say there's nothing wrong with me. Now I just live with it.

Best,

SS

Wow. I didn't know he was on both. Well, he was abusing them, not just taking them on occasion. Didn't know this. Thanks. :)
