A friend of mine (trust me, this is not me) when he runs out of cigarette he will go around the neighborhood and pick up old cigs and empty them out, put them in a rolling paper and smokes them. Some of these cigarettes and very old and have even been rained on. Yeah it's so disgusting I know and I tried telling him not to do it. Anyway, my question is what are the health consequences of doing this? Can mold grow on old tobacco? If so is it dangerous to be doing this?8o

Yes, mould can grow on tobacco, and smoking gutter butts is a good way to get respiratory tract infections.

Also, the nicotine content of butts is lower when they get soaked in water.

my friend does this too, it's disgusting, and yes there are many risks that come with doing it, because dirt, grime and disease carrying insects will have gotten to the butt before your friend did. tell him to stop. NOW.

I don't know where to start... that is really stupid and just plain gross.

Ugh, one time I saw my ex, who has had a liver transplant & is on immunosupressants, pick a half smoked cig out of an ashtray outside of a Walgreens. I was actually driving her home from the hospital because she had a MRSA infection & we stopped there to get the medicine that the doctor gave her. When I pointed out how gross & stupid that was she got mad. Cigarettes are nasty enough, but USED cigarettes brings it to a whole new level.

Done this a few times with my own butts in my backyard or garage when fiending lol not a proud moment but atleast they are my own...

lots of people do this, while its not exactly sanitary i dont think its that unsafe especialy if your just breaking them up and rerolling the tabacco

I've seen plenty of people do this, and it's really nasty. Like an above poster said, there's the risk of hepatitis. That's always the first thing that goes through my mind when I see anyone pick up some butt from the ground or from an ashtray and light it up. Nasty, nasty stuff.

I'll smoke my own shorts or a friends shorts if I know them well. They are always in ash trays and never that old (usually a day at the most).

correct me if im wrong but i though hepatitis was spread strictly by blood, i mean if you cant catch it by kissing someone how can you catch from sucking on a old cig

anyone heard of a "re fry" it's when you don't finish your cig so you put it out and save it for a rainy day i do that often with no problems at all

everyone i know does this, though found cigs are usualy refered to as snipes
