Turns out it was my old yahoo email addy that was hacked, I logged into it today and Yahoo advised me my email had been compromised so to change my password. Hope that wasn't some sort of other scam to get my new password.

I used to use free ones for years, AVG, and someothers, but my PC ended up being totally ragged with viruses trojans etc still

I pay for kaspersky now, and not had a single problem for 4 years, doesn't matter what grot sites I go on.

MM, you have my interest, can you really buy software ? I though that was just a myth....you go to some kind of shop I suppose they give you the stuff on a CDs or maybe even DVDs and then you pay them money for it and take it away....sounds very similar to downloading it for free but with some travel and cash involved, I cant think of an analogy off hand that covers it (may be something to do with prostitution bits its a bit early for that level of detail)

And where can I find such a purveyor, I may just visit for the experience alone, you'll be telling m you can but operating systems next

@Spade this is a common type of infection, I doubt they have your passwords of anything, they just use the account to send out Spam, we had one hit the office in the early days of the company when IT was one it and he was sloppy . It just bounced round the whole network flooding people with mail. As soon as you opened the mail it would mail everyone else in you address book, that normally the score.

People keep telling me they are receiving spam emails from my email addy. When I log into my emails there's no record of anything dodgy in the sent items or does it not work like that?

It worries me as I use the same password for a lot of things and even had some banking details, flight details (with passport number) etc stored in the email box. I use cyber rights which I thought was supposed to be really secure.



What can I do?

Should I be scanning my PC for viruses? This shitty old PC doesn't even ave a virus scan on it, anyone recommend a free one that's pretty good?

ahahahahahahahahaha spadey, u big girl, someone's spoofing your email adrress :O no biggie! (dw they dont have ur passwords or nething) best just to ignore it.

As for AV, switch to something like Kubuntu (a linux distro) its easy to use (works pretty much the same as windows) except everything is free, and you dont need to worry about script kiddies and their stupid worms. If you dont want to switch O/S then kaspersky is a good AV for windows. Any suspect files, upload them to www.virustotal.com and it will scan the files with like 50 diff av scanners.

Ignore all advice so far. It sounds to me like you've been hacked by a member of the flying shark squad who squat in your computer box and send emails from the hard drive directly. If you don't take the computer apart and confront him then the only other option is to kick the shit out of your computer so he gets the message and leaves back through the internets.
