Has Political Correctness Gone Mad?

I just answered you. Again this is not what i posted about...i posted about people if one sex saying they are the other when biologically they are not. It's what you called me an arsehole for..

A man born a man without these biological differences you bring up but which are a completely separate issue is not a woman in my books.

I guess you just like to argue but i wont be interacting with you any further.

I don't find any use to facebook past keeping in touch with lost friends; I have mine deactivated and my social life has only picked up since then. Just my opinion. If you don't wana see stuff about a transsexual individual calling themselves by the sex you perceive to be improper, then unfriend them on facebook; you don't have to say anything about it at all really, and that's where the whole fuss over semantics is silly as fuck. If you disagree and don't want your mind changed, just man the heck up and disengage from the conversation. Boom, now you never see anyone talking about being a woman, cause you got off facebook and reentered real life where you don't have to hear shit from anyone you don't want to.

There's nothing wrong with using the internet to socialize, my issue with facebook is that you end up seeing a bunch of bullshit you never cared to see, then facebook harasses you and asks why don't you have more friends, and you're like fuck off facebook, I only have 50 real life friends/acquaintances I care to hear about, I don't need to hear about every damn person I went to high school with. But it doesn't matter, they still want you to friend that dick from high school, or that sjw, or that pretentious dick who went to Harvard and thinks he's god's gift to the world.

I dont use Facebook. I have already stated that. My friends were talking about it. The subject was bought up earlier so i thought i valid to comment on it in this thread. Obviously these views are my own. You are entitled to yours as is everyone else. Being called an arsehole by a mod for expressing them is exactly what this thread is about.

It's interesting how many people are - by default - translating the idea of excessive political correctness into a left-right issue. I realise there are some lazy tropes and cliches with which to caricature both sides of the debate, but the documentary in question was considerably less binary and more nuanced.

For example prohibiting an artist from exhibiting a series of photos that capture an aspect of a culture or religion in case it offends that culture or religion is not liberal in any way, and neither is prohibiting a magazine from depicting a religious figure that may offend some. But opposing this may have you branded a reactionary dinosaur and racist.

Germaine Greer and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie have both recently been pilloried as bigots and transphobes for daring to raise some issues that are worthy of a serious discussion and not just reactive social-media abuse for daring to transgress a PC divide. This seems to reflect the tendency for extreme PC behaviour to stifle debate and create self-defeating division rather than open discussion and consensus.

For me this is more about how people (of any political persuasion) have a depressingly predictable capacity to blindly follow whatever doctrine is in fashion and take it to an extreme, in the process constructing opponent tribes - 'others' - against whom they may define themselves. You're either with us, or against us - and people on the 'left' and 'right' are both guilty of this.
This is the post i was commenting on btw.

Okay, well then, your friend never would have had to see it. People have self-segregated from people they don't like since the dawn of time. If she doesn't wana hear about this transsexual, then she can unfriend them. I'm just saying. Forgive me for stating the same thing over and over, I'm just trying to emphasize the fact that you shouldn't care what someone calls themselves, because it really doesn't effect you in the least. Your friend feels it devalues womanhood or something? Is the struggle of being born into the wrong body, as such people believe they have, not equal (if not worse) to the pains of progressing through womanhood?

I often find the people most offended by transsexualism are the ones who know none in their daily life and shouldn't give a rats ass about it anyways.

Look, I want you guys to call me Cream Gravy? from now on, I'm no longer willing to use my given name. So I've made up some shit for myself, it doesn't effect anyone, it's just semantics... do you see my point? Who cares what people call themselves or how they act as long as they refrain from intruding on other's lives. No one is going to arrest you for calling a trans female a male, or vice versa, so who cares?

Are you concerned that in the future, someone may arrest you over semantics? Serious question. And if so, a serious concern to be sure.

I mean, it wasn't an attack on my part, I thought it was a pleasant debate; did I call you an arsehole? :?

Also, I don't think it's a valid opposing view; most opposition to trans-sexuality seems to stem from people uncomfortable with their (transsexuals) very existence. Perhaps they have some nightmare where they're at it with a girl then she has a dick, who knows. For all intents and purposes, a transgender woman is still a woman, I don't see any reason to argue against that myself. If they wana call themselves something, that's fine, at least in my book...

No Tathra called me an arsehole.

I dont give a fuck what people do..what they call themselves. I just dont think a guy with fake tits in a dress is a real actual woman. Thats my personal view..it is valid as is your view. This is the problem with political correctness. It completely extinguishes any conversation about topics that are deemed "off limits" and if you stray from the politically correct view you get called an arsehole or transphobe or whatever. To me it seens the only people afraid here are the ones calling people names.

Anyway i have had enough of this conversation. You can have a politically correct circle jerk now.

It would be nice if we just had third gender, like kathoey in Thailand; or in some Native American tribes, there were third genders. I think people have a real problem because to them sex is rigid and there's certainly a muddling of the terms gender and sex these days.

But yeah, we can drop it if you want.

You against the world, eh? :\

You made a statement but seem shocked that people disagree. You're always in some disagreement here, why are you surprised?

I didn't read that as Tathra calling you an asshole. But, if you believe that maintaining the semantic definition of the word 'woman' is of more importance than making a gesture to allay the often difficult experience of gender dysphoric individuals, you're on the wrong track. Why does the meaning of a word have more value than the real experience of a person? Its not about being PC, its about not being an asshole to someone who is suffering.

At the end of the day, who cares? It hardly effects me, I'll call a person whatever they want knowing we're all in this hellish mess together.

And as far as being an arsehole and making people feel bad about themselves i certainly do not set out to do anything of the sort. I merely mentioned i agreed with what some female friends of mine were saying. I wish i had never brought it up. I certainly didn't think people would agree with me..i am not shocked as you imply i am. I will just keep my opinions to myself and stay the fuck out of this forum.

Goodbye.

Well, I have no problem with what you said. It seems you have a problem with how you were disagreed with. I'm not sure what you expected...

Suit yourself. It would be a shame though. :\

So, if you have a vagina, you're a woman, period, and if you have a penis, you're a man, period?

I agree with this statement. I am quite far to the left on social issues.

but we are talking about the lexicon of america at large...and its defined by the physical appearance of your genitals in that respect.

I under stand the whole gender identity thing and I get that they want to be called "woman" even though they still have a penis because of their identity. but they are just getting pissed off that all of america won't automatically change this lexicon of gender to conform with the "gender identity" movement...then calling it bigoted.

this is an example of PC going to far. nobody is discriminating, they just don't understand this new (to them) out of the ordinary use of the language to talk about these issues. Most ppl don't care enough to learn about it either, despite not being against it.

third gender. A lot of these issues seem to stem from confusing or intentionally conflating biological sex with gender.
I never heard of intersex until recently, but that's not the term I meant by saying third gender. I mean, there's like a billion now with tumblr and all that being a thing, but I'm trying to say there are cultures that simply have third genders already integrated into them and they seem to have no problems with it as a result.

Homosexuality has always been complicated in America (up until maybe a decade ago you could be arrested for sodomy in my state) and I really think that's what's eating at the heart of the current gender rights/PC issue.

it doesn't, its just that we can't redefine what 90% or so of the population thinks a word means just so it doesn't hurt 0.01% of the populations feelings.
its not practical

maybe in time it will change, like white people not using the N word to refer to blacks anymore, but there are a lot more black ppl than trans ppl in the country so I wouldn't hold my breath that it goes like that.

I'm all for them making the change in language...but people can't get mad that its not catching on or insinuate that not changing the language used is somehow hateful

How do you know they have a penis? Are you checking? Or just assuming that because they weren't born a woman that they must have a penis still? Fact is, short of trying to rape or sexually assault them, you'll never know unless they tell or show you. So for all intents and purposes, women are women, unless you get intimate with them and you find out they have different equipment at the moment (which anyone with a shred of integrity would bring up before panties drop).
