Primarily to test piperazines.

Not a lot of people have access to test kits. So then, has anyone tried any household products to test pills?

Since the Marquis solution contains sulfuric acid (H2SO4) doesn't that mean we can try out other acids to produce the fizzing effect that BZP/Pipers produce when tested with them?

I don't wanna risk trying it out yet and getting caught by my parents/siblings.

Has anyone tried vinegar or other acids/indicators?

hmm i'll try orange juice tomm. thats a start.
now if everyone here grabs a household acid or whatever and do a test on some fake pillz someones bound to find one mayyyybe. lol that'd be hilarious.

o0o0oh look im a bluelighter now. =)
happy day!

marquis reacts on a lot of household products

Sugar / Asprin / Tea etc and they are a great way to check that your kit is still 'active' when you get a new kit test some sugar and note the colour and time of reaction - in 12 months time you can repeat the process and see if you kit is still ok.

You can make some drug test solutions at home, but none that are sufficient for testing for MDMA (Something tells me that hardware store H2SO4 and formaldehyde would not make a usable marquis reagent)

^Thats not really true as you can make Marquis etc with just a few readily available chemicals - if you check the pillreport testing section on Making your own kit theres instructions etc.

I cannot find that topic - could you point me to it a bit more specifically? This is very relevant to a project i'm working on.

I'm not sure if you mean some part of pillreports.com that I can't find, or a thread on BL (searching this forum for "making your own kit" doesn't get me anything)

I would be truly impressed if _hardware store_ sulfuric acid and formaldehyde (from paraformaldehyde anti-mildew agents) would be clean enough to not react with some impurity in one of the ingredients.

i think most ppl mis-intreperted what the OP was asking. Correct me if im wrong, but i think he was talkin about what chemicals can we use to test to see if our pillz contain a pipe.

not to see if our test kits r still good.

This question (if I am interpreting what the OP wants correctly) is way above my knowledge of simple chemistry, so I am moving this to Pill Testing Q&A to see if phase_dancer can shed some light on the subject.

:)

Yeah I misunderstood the post - I thought they were asking what household things could you test with a kit (sorry).

this should cover it :)

While other presumptive test reagents use different acids, it should be noted, that sulphuric acid is a very strong acid and while H2SO4 itself is capable of forming coloured compounds with a variety of substances, the reagent becomes far more versatile when formaldehyde is added. Many of the colored product produced with Marquis aren't produced with sulphuric acid alone. Put simply, many of the typical reaction colours are formed by linkages involving reactions with formaldehyde, with acid acting as a oxidising agent, a catalyst or just to sufficiently lower pH so the reactions proceed.

From Forensic Chemistry by Suzanne Bell

In the case of the Marquis and morphine, a linked oxonium carbonium ion has been suggested as the source of the violet-colored product via an intermediate linked structure. The mechanism is analogous to the amphetamine-methamphetamine pathway: an attack on formaldehyde by the amine, the linkage of two drug molecules, and formation of the colored carbonium under acidic conditions.

With Mandelin it's the vanadate oxidation state catalyzed by the acid, that forms coloured coordination complexes, so while the H2SO4 is important in the reactions, it's not the only vital piece if you get my drift.

That's not to say other things won't form colored products with piperazines, but without understanding what types of reaction/ products are likely and thereby being able to narrow down the search for those likely to produce a unique chromophore, imo it would be like finding a needle in a haystack. Also, such "total guess experiments" could pose hazards if something reacts violently.
