Has anyone chewed Coca Leaf?

I've chewed coca leaf, but it was coca grown domestically in the US, so it probaly had a low content of cocaine alkaloids. It provides an energy reminiscent of a couple cans of Red Bull, but nothing you could call euphoria.

I bought some Coca leaves in a smartshop in Amsterdam, simply for novelty value, I didn't even know they could sell them so I decided to give it a try.

I got a numb mouth that was kind of nice, but I can't say much about the high because I was already incredibly stoned from weed and any psychoactive effects would have been mild anyway.

Cool, cool. Thanx for the replies.

I really thought theyd be stronger than that maybe right in between 2 cans of red bull and the powder essense. (Stronger than 2 red bulls)

Torch: I just chewed it alone.

Basically if you chew enough I'd imagine you could get a nice buzz from it, but the taste is really rather bitter.

hehe, funny story... my spanish teacher in high school went to peru on vacation and brought back a huge bag of coca leaves, she got them through customs explaining she was a teacher.

she says this big bag that looks like a quarter pound cost her 35 cents. well she starts passing them out to the class then says anyone want more? and a few ppl get up and i grab a decent handful, at least 10 leaves. i think she trusted us cause we were her top academic class- Spanish 5. but she says to keep it quiet.

I chew them and they make my mouth numb. dont taste bad at all. 5 mins later i had a great buzz! like coke, i felt much more awake, talkative, and energetic. it lasted about an hour.

Cool story, I wish our teachers had let us chew them, but the closest we got was seeing them!

Some kids from my school went to Peru for a few months in an exchange program, then came back with a big sack of the leaves for some kind of show and tell (they had artifacts and stuff too, but the leaves were the main attraction).

When they came to our class the teacher looked at me smugly and said to the whole class: "OK, let's pass this around but make sure Gunnar doesn't get too close or this bag is gonna be getting smaller, FAST!"

My name is Gunnar, and everyone laughed. Ahh, the joys of being the class junky ;)

I got to Bolivia every summer (this is the first summer in 11 years that I dont go) and coca leaves grow everywhere there. I bring back Coca tea which is called Mate de Coca, which helps with stomach aches as well as nausea. But the taxi drivers chew them all night so that they can stay awake all night and drive around. They smell like shit when you chew them but they do work, they energize the shit out of you and numb up your mouth. You definitely don't get the rush like you do with Cocaine though... its more like drinking a hell of a lot of coffee...

Thought I'd chime in with a slightly different experience.

I just returned from Peru where as others have said, mate de coca is an everyday tea and altitude tonic in the Andes (I was in Cuzco in the Sacred Valley). Also, as already stated, you can buy approximately an ounce of leaf for 1 sole (35 cents).

I found no altitude relief or any sort of pleasure from the tea itself. I thought it tasted rather nice, better than most teas, however, I'm not a tea fan in general.

While hiking the Inca trail, I got a pretty grnarly case of altitude sickness so I busted out the leaves and chewed on them. I didn't use a catalyst like lime, or whatever you supposed to chew it with. Our guide (an idigenous Indian) didn't say it was required. The only effects I did get were a mildly numb mouth and nasty green spit. It never really helped my shortness of breath and rapid heartbeat unfortuantely. So I had to turn around and do the walk of shame. I wouldn't have made it to 4200 meters considering how I was already doing at 3060 meters.

Anyways, it was defiantely a novelty, the tea was pretty yummy, but with both preparations, I didn't get any pleasurable effects.

Oh and I didn't attempt to bring mate de coca or the coca leaf bags back to the US. Seemed like playing with fire.

It's nothing special. I would rather have large cup of coffee. If you are looking for the leaves to give you anything over what 200mgs of caffeine would do, you will be disapointed.
