Hardware - Mass email to condemn GHB/1,4b use

^^ I am thinking along the same lines. Human stupidity permeates the use of any drug, legal or not. There will always be overdoses, but I think that a governmental policy of education will result in less deaths than one of blind zero tolerance. If people know about the drug and know the concentration of the drug, they're less likely to make stupid mistakes than if they know nothing about it and are unsure as to the concentration of their solution. Undoubtedly the former - regulated supply and education - is far too radical for the rather conservative powers that be to ever accept. But zero tolerance is not practical. I think a midpoint has to be found - forget regulating the drug (thereby leave it illegal) but for gods sake educate people about it.

A friend today suggested (from a completely darwinian perspective) that stopping ambulances attending GHB overdoses for a month, in turn letting several users die, might change things.

I'm by no means in favour of such a radical and inhuman proposition, but I'm sorry to say that I can see where he's coming from. :\

I see that this is not an issue that will just disappear. And I agree that education is vital to stop these people dropping all over the place.

But is it not in Dance Culture's best interest to have a zero tolerance policy at nightclubs and events? Do any of us like seeing people dropping at events due to this ever growing menace?

Is it not the zero tolerance policy at under 18's Bluelight Disco's that keep these underage events something parents would allow their children to attend?

In turn then, is it not fair for a promoter or club owner to make it clear that there is zero tolerance of G at their events, in the protection of their interests and in dance culture's interests?

I know that if I was told that I was a 'loser' by a particular venue/group for my method of giving my brain a vacation, I would not be attending their events.

Hence, the greater good for all associated with that group/scene is achieved.

IMHO, regardless of zero tolerance or not, its still going to happen.
If people want to do something, they will find a way.

I can remember a time when MDMA was the devil, especially after Anna Wood died and yet this did little to stop people taking pills did it?

We get searched before going into an event, does that stop us taking drugs in?

As for calling people "losers", I really don't think people are going to care one way or another what they are called.
I find the whole name calling thing quite pathetic to be honest.

i'll take the side of "responsable" drug use.

i have done GHB in the past, quite liked it, and no ill effects, but then again i never took multiple doses in a night..:\ just the intial, then a redose..i never got around to finding the facts about a "safe" dosage to take over a period of 6-8hrs (general time i spend on average in clubs when i go out) so i never did, i found the combos where things can become sketchy (alcohol for instance).

Not saying follow my lead or anything, but when did the majority of people decide to stop learning about what goes into their bodies?

When society encourages drug excess during celebrations and recreation, there is no place for "club", "street" or "party" drugs with a low margin of dosing error. It is absolutely inappropriate and dangerous to use these drugs in such an uncontrolled environment: external factors, re-dosing amounts/times, impaired judgement and legal ramifications all contribute to the high rate of casualties experienced with low-safety-margin (or bluntly, "high risk") drugs.

With such a fine line between "perfect dose" and "loss of control/unconscious", a very short activity duration requiring periodic re-dosing, illicit supply in liquid forms of varying concentration, and potentially fatal contraindication with depressants (including benzodiazepines, the prevalent legal drug alcohol and, of course, itself), GHB/1,4B is NOT a 'good club drug'. It is indeed a fine recreational drug, whose risks can be reduced by the careful user in a controlled environment... but the bottom line is that if you don't treat it like a high risk drug, then you won't take sufficient precautions and you might wake up in hospital (or not wake up at all).

Leave the G at home.

It reminds me of the 'only dags use fags' stickers we got given in primary school.

Zero tolerance may not be a good idea but stickers handed out (Say no to G) and the general raving reaction to the problem is a step forward. People need to know that we don't want this drug around the scene.

Maybe not spread the word that its a bad drug to take but make sure they know it's a bad drug to take while they are raving and clubbing . I so much agree with this quote from Kemical Burn.

Whilst I whole-heartedly agree with the idea that the email should have been a harm minimisation one, IMHO unfortunately in today's age of public liaibility, venue restictions/insurance, blah, blah I think you'll find it would be very hard/unwise for a BUSINESS such as Hardware, Future, et al to take any other stance than the basic "drugs are illegal. don't do them".

Yes we all know that realistically this approach wont work, but to be honest I believe their hands are tied.

:(
Bingo.

Why do you think Slinky is going to be held at the Palace instead of Melbourne Park next month?

Taking any other approach to the one Richie did, wouldn't go down too well with venues/media etc. Key word - Business.

BTW: GHB is one of my favourite recreational substances, therefore making me quite pissed off after receiving the Hardware e-mail, but like I said, they have no choice but to take this stance.

Hey Pete,
Nope I didnt get a reply, but I didnt really expect to. They are best to keep quiet about it and arent going to back down on their stance.

come on guys... "Just Say No" =) I've had a killer 2c-i loop to this question before... what a headfuck
