Hangover "cures?"

Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, but opens up the lungs just a bit if you're asthmatic. Both vasoconstrictors and vasodilators can cause headaches at high doses.

^^ Yeah, I looked it up today. It's a vasoconstrictor. Yayyyy my wine mind didn't fail me this time. I don't really like to correct someone unless I look it up first especially after wine. =D

I did read that it is good for asthmatics to take caffeine as a preventative of airway constriction. But the airway constriction from asthmatics is from muscles around the air passages constricting as well as immune responses.

Really? I'll have to look that up, but I thought that it was mostly an inflammatory response. And AFAIK only 20% of asthma cases are allergy related-- which is why singulair works so well on some people and not at all on others, like me.

Overall though, caffeine's bronchiodilation effect is minor. I wouldn't rely on coffee unless there was absolutely nothing else around.

Yes, inflammatory response (immune response).

I read some good tips on asthma for a client who is trying to sell homeopathic medications. Most of the things I read were allergy related, though.

Hm, maybe that's why prednisone works so well; it depresses the immune system in addition to (or as a means to) decrease inflammation.

i toooootally could have used some of these preventive measures about 2 fridays ago.

drank enough on a completely empty stomach to make myself sick for two whole days!

it's not good when you can't keep toast down at 6:30 pm the next day.

/lesson learned

But... eating something first makes it so much harder to drink yourself silly. Silly ;)

IT's amazing that I make money writing. LOL

I was agreeing, but saying that you should only eat a LITTLE bit. Too much food and you feel <puke> annnd you don't get a good buzz.

I agree with all of the healthy suggestions in this thread. But here's a non-healthy, but effective solution. If opiates don't make you puke, vicodin opiates are a sure-fire cure for a hangover, no joke. They don't even have to be strong ones: I know a couple of people who live in Seattle who stock up on OTC codeine and pop a few after a night of drinking. Voila. All better. You'll still be tired but that's about it.

You still need to re-hydrate yourself preferably with electrolytes. In fact, you should drink even more than usual because the opiates will dehydrate you more. But if you follow up by eating very healthy food (I'd recommend seeweed of any form as part of your post-binge hangover), you'll feel great in the least amount of time.

I know I'll probably get shit for this post, but it does work and this advice has been echoed in other threads on this site.

Yeah, let's kill (or rather mask) a hangover by taking a highly addictive opiate!

That said, I'd rather take an opiate over alcohol any day. Alcohol is a shit drug, but unfortunately it's the only one that I have reasonable access to.

lol No, I hear ya... those work, but add more stress for the liver. Gawd I love codeine...

the morning after, without preventative measures, i found that drinking apple sauce helped with nausea and dehydration. sometimes i get so hungover that even drinking anything too fast makes me puke, but applesauce is slow, filling, and is great for a thirst quencher.

i dont drink that often because of the hangovers i always get. but i plan on experimenting with the salt water theory. thank yooooou

The good old Mary Jane! she'll never let me down =D

of course if you don't smoke, I find that apple juice in the morning, along with gatorade or water the night before helps immensely. Fresh fruit and anything with vitamin C helps too. I've yet to try the ionic water thing..but thanks! New ideas are always great.
