A killer weed outlawed in America after being blamed for the death of several teenagers has popped up in a Chessington couple’s garden.

The plant first appeared in Marilyn and Tony Bagshaw’s plot in Green Lane about four weeks ago and has already grown to a height of about 3ft (0.9m).

At first the couple ignored the plant, but after becoming curious about its origins, Mrs Bagshaw decided to search the internet and was shocked with what she discovered.

She found the “pretty looking plant” was in fact Datura stramonium, a thorn apple also known as devil’s trumpet, devil’s weed or stink weed.

It bears spiky fruit, poisonous flowers and seeds that can cause hallucinations, hypothermia and painful photophobia that can last several days.

Mrs Bagshaw said: "I was shocked when I found out this pretty plant growing in the back garden was in fact a drug killing teenagers in America.

Oh Noes, not Datura!!

A quick tip to people who find datura growing around them- don't eat it, and you won't be high on it. Sage advise to avoid a datura trip.

Datura is probably the most available drug in the US (at least where I am). Back in the beginning of highschool when I didn't have much drug money I'd always just go grab a few handfuls of datura at one of the 20 or so plants within a few miles and I had a few crazy nights. Not that that's a good idea of course, but just sayin that it ain't hard to get datura at all.

I don't take datura anymore but I like having it growing around me, it's a beautiful and interesting plant.

This is just too logical.
But, what if some kids come and take the flowers and eat them and - (sit down, this part is scary) - experience alternative consciousness?!?!
Then the homeowners would need to feel responsible, and kill themselves, like the guy here.

they will never ban datura, its too pretty, evil and regulates itself pretty well

they will never ban it because it grows everywhere. I saw a few plants today in the southwest desert

Has anyone taken datura and enjoyed it?

I have some growing in the backyard. I've never taken it. If there was a "correct" way to do it, I would.

No, but I've taken moderate doses of benadryl (DPH) and it wasn't unpleasant. I'd just dose low and work up slowly - grind a lot of dried material to a powder so the alkaloid concentration is consistent and weigh out your doses. All the bad trips on erowid are from people who just ate 'some' and got way too wasted.

It would be like trying to ban kudzu. simply impossible, as we see how well it worked with cannabis:|. Why is there absolutely no journalistic integrity left anywhere? I know thats a generalization, but still, the vast majority of articles about any topic have little to no research done on the topic. What happened to being proud of what you do?

i can literally walk down the street here and i know of at least three corners that it grows on. back in wisconsin, my mom got a plant and it took over an entire corner of her garden. so what, its pretty

EDIT: another thing, where are they getting this information about "jamestown weed"?

DOUBLE EDIT: they stole it from fucking wikipedia. they didnt even change the goddamn wording, pure fucking plagarism

I've taken datura and enjoyed it. I've done datura probably 100 or so times and for a while did low to moderate doses almost every day.

Still, I wouldn't recommend using it, there isn't really a "correct" way. Datura requires immense caution and respect. I'm lucky nothing bad happened to me when I used it all the time. For a while datura was my primary recreational drug, long ago when I was 14.

I dried and ground it, but then I made it into a tea. This shit is surprisingly strong! Two little sips have just about knocked me on my ass.

i remember reading on bluelight that these compounds are highly neurotoxic. i tried a couple antihistamine trips in high school. it felt good (i have a rather unique brain... they are supposed to be dysphoric) but not worth the lasting effects.

these aren't "psychedelic" drugs, imo. they induce delirium rather than manifest the soul.
