Hallucinogenic mushrooms at heart of dispute that led Portland boy to take loaded gun to school, police say
The 14-year-old Franklin High School student accused of taking his parents' loaded gun to school Tuesday morning wanted to settle a drug dispute over hallucinogenic mushrooms, police said Wednesday.
The firearm was a small-caliber handgun, police Sgt. Pete Simpson said.
The boy was one of two students arrested and accused of unlawful possession of a firearm Tuesday. A 15-year-old student who was later found with the gun in his pocket also was charged. Both boys are expected to be arraigned in juvenile court Wednesday afternoon.
Police haven't arrested any parent tied to the gun, police said.
Portland police were called just around noon to the high school after another student had seen the 14-year-old pull the gun out and show it to a group while at lunch off-campus at the nearby Burger King at Southeast Foster Road and Powell Boulevard.
A student aware of the incident told high school staff.
School resource officers responded, learned the name of a 15-year-old student last seen with the gun and called him to the office.
The 15-year-old still had the loaded gun in his pocket, police said.
An investigation revealed that two 14-year-old boys had a dispute over a drug transaction, and one of the students took his parents' gun to school Tuesday morning to "demand his money be returned from the alleged drug seller,'' police said.
A 15-year-old friend took the gun after the Burger King confrontation, placed it in his pocket and returned to school.
The 14-year-old boy who brought the gun to school and the 15-year-old who was found with it were lodged at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Home.
The students could face a one-year expulsion from school under state law.
