The breath of life, polluted and bleak
The scent of death, a perfumed pine

Light's glow, a stab in the eye
Darkness's cloak, A glow for miles

Flesh and blood, a prison of pain
The human spirit, the skeleton of mind

I thank you for the human spirit
A sputtering flash in the engine of loss
When my muscles ache, it presses on
When hope is lost, it finds a reason

My body want to purge itself from its own hubris
And my spirit hangs on to the escaping soul
Sitting in hells that are more than imagined
It tells me that there's one more road

Dejected in corners that no man traverse
Sunken 'neath depths that fish avoid
Lighting my eyes when they they to stay closed
My spirit is the closest I've come to a cry

I may be shattered beyond easy repair
The might be no more hope left for me
But at least I can praise my aided preservation
Even if it's a cold and broken hallelujah

Nice one Sam, could do with a fine edit and a few tweaks from the fifth stanza on. Otherwise, this gave me a rather cold feeling.
