Revealing my age, but when we were taught this in grade school, it was done while clapping the syllables out. It's very hard for me to haiku without working it out ahead of typing with a bunch of autistic looking clapping going on.

Also, my Spanish teacher liked to tell us to put the emPHAsis on the correct syLLAble (intentionally emphasizing wrong).
