Guns/Weapons Discussion

I don't own one yet but as soon as I turn 21 (16 days) I am going to pick up a small .22 for target practice and a standard 9mm baretta for home protection. The baretta will also be used for target practice, when I can actually afford 9mm ammunition. Not sure which models yet, i'll figure that out after talking with my more expirienced gunweilding friends and the shopkeeper.

psychetool, might i suggest a glock or a kahr. i've heard many bad things about baretta. unreliable, break easy, etc. i've got a glock 17, about to get 19. totally reliable, and compareably inexpensive. 9mm ammo is prob the cheapest, next to .22.

What is your weapon of choice to keep your family/property safe?

my glock 17 is my primary. my back-ups are my remmington 870 and my bushmaster m4-rgery. and if all else fails, my Strider BT.

That is a very nice knife, how much did it cost you? Also what steel is it? I'd like to see the look on the head-chef's face if I brought that into the kitchen. ;o

a first firearm?

so i want to purchase a handgun in the coming months. i have never owned a firearm of any sort before in my life, however i think the time has come.

obviously i do not know much about handguns, so i am wondering if any of you have any advice for me. i do not want to buy some cheap piece of crap, but it does not have to be top of the line either. a gun i can conceal if i want to, but at the same time not a tiny little thing. i was thinking maybe a .38 or .45. something to take to the range and shoot peoples feet with, you know?

any reccommendations?

was this a serious question? or are you being sarcastic? couldn't really tell at the end.

i'm being serious. i just threw the foot shooting part in there as a joke of sorts. in all honesty i am serious about purchasing a firearm. i am also serious about making it an educated purchase. i dont want to waste my money and piece of shit, but i also don't want to drop $1000 on a gun.

Where did he say he needs one?

"so i want to purchase a handgun in the coming months."

And he already mentioned the reason why he wants a gun.

bong420tripper- first of all, what state or country do you live in? second, what's your budget? actually, before you think of buying a gun, i suggest taking a basic firearms safety course and a home defense course. if you can, please answer the first 2 questions so i can better help you. we can go from there.:)

He never stated why, in fact. I wouldn't consider anything from the original post a reason why.

bong420tripper said he wanted a gun to take to a range.

Many people from your country consider this a valid reason to own a gun (check out your local gun club), I don't know why you are holding it against this guy.

If you want a cheap beginer gun that will not drop your bank roll like a weight in water. I would suggest a Glock. Ectremely reliable, and cheap. They around 500usd. If you want cheaper, the only thing I could recommendwith a lower price is something from the Kel-Tec range of compacts. They are around 250 for the 9mm, and it's damn reliable after break in.

It's all a matter of preference though. If you want small caliber Glock, Walther, and Kel-Tec are the cheapest you can get that are still rock solid reliable. I love all three brands myself. I have a Glock and Kel-Tec. I just acquired my Wlather P99, and am looking for a PPK as well.

I haven't shot the P99, but I have shot a PPK, and it's a smooth gun from holster pull to reload. Cleaning is a pita, but it's not as hard as cleaning the M4gery. Basically I'm trying to sell you on the Walther, because it's the best overall in this range. Not to mention it's a classic, and they are steel framed guns, so limp-wristing isn't as much of an issue with it. You can get the PPK for around 400usd, and the P99 for around 500usd too.

Now matter which one you get, you do need to take a safety course, and check the laws in your area to find out what you need to own one legally. After your first time to the range, don't be hard on yourself with how poor you may have shot. It takes a lot of practise to be able to hit a still target decently, and even more to hit a moving target.

I see people that go hunting, and have been going for years, and when they come to the rifle range on base for the first time, they learn that they weren't shit out at 100 yards or more. Now mind you we are talking rifles that are zeroed at 300 yards, and only require a steady pull and decent aim to hit the target. Then again, I have seen people that have never shot a gun before in their life come in, and spend hours a t day learning how to shoot a rifle properly, and hit a target dead on. It just takes practise, and good habit mentallity.

Feel free to contact me via the site's PM if you have any serious questions related to this topic.

You looking for an automatic, or a revolver?

I'd recommend a revolver, .357 mag specifically. It's not underpowered, not overpowered, not extremely expensive to shoot.

Taurus makes some damn good revolvers. If I were you I'd check into them.

Though, the best thing you could do...

Would be to go down to your local shooting range and ask around. Most people will be more than happy to let you pop off a few shots with their firearm. Get a feel for what you want before you go out and buy something. Buying before testing is the worst thing you can do.

Sphinx (Afterlife) - You don't know a damn thing about guns if you're recomending a Desert Eagle. First of all, those are well out of his price range. And .50 cal ammo is extremely expensive.

i totally recomend something in 9mm. it's the cheapest and easiest to find. next to .22. glock 17 or 19 would be my recomendation. easy to shoot. easy to maintain. relatively inexpensive. heck, if you buy one second hand, you can send it to glock to get it reconditioned for free.(shipping not included) so essentially you get it new.

Maybe I'm the only one. But I think 9mm are shit. They have practially 0 penetration power. Every 'gangsta' and his grandma has one.

SHOT PLACEMENT!

this, in itself, could be one long debate. however, one could defend themselves with a .22 if they wanted to. would you want to be shot with one? didn't think so. just remember, 2 to the chest and 1 to the head. besides, b420t is a begginer. and he was looking for cheap and easy to find ammo. besides.22, 9mm would be next on the list.

Very true. I myself intend to buy a .22 handgun when I turn 21. It's the most affordable ammo out there, and I intent to do a lot more plinking than robber takedowns anyways.

Can anyone recommend a quality .22 revolver? I decided against buying multiple guns my first time, and am just going for a relatively cheap target pistol to learn the ropes. No 9mm, .38, or .45 for me thank you. At least not yet. Taurus seems to have quite a few of them, but how do you determine which is quality and which is not ? What would the difference be (in terms of actual shooting/firepower) between two revolvers made by the same person but with slightly different weights/design ?
