I'm not entirely convinced by the claim that "Ecstasy can and does - kill". Ecstasy kills fewer people than satsumas do each year yet you rarely hear "Satsumas can and do - kill".

I suppose everything known to man can and does kill - water kills you if you drink a lot of it.

Margaret Thatcher authorised needle exchanges for injecting heroin users and in a single move, cut HIV rates to some of the lowest in Europe, contrasting sharply with countries that do not offer clean needles to users. It is impossible to imagine the timid David Cameron attempting such a radical move – even as his skin singes on the ecstasy-drenched island of Ibiza.

Did Thatcher do that because she had compassion for junkies or simply because there was such hysteria about HIV at the time that she had no choice?

Probably hoping they'd all OD and die. And they had those highly effective "Heroin: It really screws you up" public information films around the same time they had the "AIDS: Don't die of ignorance" ones so knew both issues would be solved by those anyway.

It is surprisingly decent considering it was not only the Tories but Queen Bitch herself wot dun it. I suspect it was only due to the AIDS hysteria at the time though. Aren't half the average Tory MP's kids junkies anyway? Probably self-preservation so they could continue to bugger 'em of a night. This is Tories we're talking about, after all :D

Really was it her? Remember, she was probably pretty grateful to her personal doctor following the IRA's near-miss at Brighton Grand.

And her personal doctor was a heroin addict. Strange world eh?
