Giant drug manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline announced today that it intends to stop paying doctors to prescribe more of the company’s drugs, a move that could possibly entice other large pharma companies to do the same.

In 2012, the company settled with the Justice Dept. for $3 billion and pled guilty to three criminal counts related to marketing and safety issues. The settlement included revelations that GSK had paid TV’s Dr. Drew Pinsky to talk up their drug Wellbutrin to his audience as a drug that could improve sexual experience for people taking antidepressants.

Or other companies will continue to do the same thing they have been.

Legalize drugs so every body has access to the drugs they need on there own. Then we don't have to worry about bribed doctors and corrupt pharmacies who are just in it for the money.

Even without prescriptions (if that's what you mean) people would still visit doctors for advice and would still be bombarded by advertisements and false information. I think pharma money would have even more influence than it has now.

GSK's move is in the right direction (it's either working hard on its image or someone at the top actually feels some moral obligation), but what is really needed is better regulation and greater awareness among doctors themselves. Spontaneous good deeds by single companies won't substitute for that.

Improve libido? I thought all those ss)n)ris decreased them? I hate all this propaganda big pharma throws out, yea they will reduce but we paid this dr to to say this other drug thats similar doesnt have the same lacking libido effect. There is this new drug called oxycodone, its addictive, messes your life up, but you can take hydrocodone instead and it wont fuck your life up as much.

For most things you could do your own research. Not saying doctors arent important or that there arent good ones but if it was O.T.C. it would be up to you what companies you supported and what forms of medicine to take.

There will always be advertising and bribery.

You say better regulation but isn't that what has real pain patients taking pointless oxycontin ops and struggling to get the prescriptions they need?

Most doctors are scum. Most pharmaceutical companies want you sick. This is just a ploy by gsk. Just one more way to keep us trading our wellness for money.
