growing weed and power bill

Alright so I don't grow weed by my room mate does... he's had around 12 plants growing in our house since late august and he just chopped them last week. Our power bill since august has been $390. I was just wondering if this seemed high to anyone else and my main question is how much of that is from his lights? I don't know his exact lighting set up but like I said he had about 12 plants . I don't really think its fair that we split the power bill evenly since he's been growing weed this whole time and i'm guessing those lights use up way more electricity? Sorry for the n00b question, i need some answers fairly quick i gotta pay this by tomorrow or they shut off our power :(
 
You should definitely talk with your room mate about the bill. Lighting those plants daily is of course running up that electricity.
 
ok obviously...you basicallty just restated my question...see the problem is he already gave me money and it was for an even split between the 4 of us that live here...i'm definitely going to talk to him again about it and I wanted a little more information from here first...does anybody with experience growing weed have a ballpark estimate or like a percentage that could help me here?? SHould he pay twice as much? less? more? I really have no idea and asking him doesn't quite make sense as he already sort of tried to get away with paying less.. i want to be a little bit more educated before I talk to him again

edit: haha no i'm not talking about the power company catching on at all...i'm just dead broke and don't really have the money to pay for something that's not even mine...
 
if your mate is growing.. He should flip for the cost of the op.. if you're receiving the benefits from the op then you should contribute something. But if you aren't then this is all on him. Sorry I didn't read much of your OP, but I see why you asked.

tell him that it's fair that he pay more as he's the one growing it and not the "house".. If it was a house decision to grow pot, then yes.. You all should split the cost.. But if this was his idea and you guys are ok with it, than he should flip the remainder of the power bill after everyone has paid their due.
 
yes that's exactly what I think...its his weed none of us get any benefits...

am I missing something here? How would i go about figuring out how much of the bill is from his setup? <<<< THIS IS MY MAIN QUESTION!!!!!

Obviously we want him to pay more but how do I figure out how MUCH MORE?

TBH you've known about this since August so I can't see your problem. You shouldn't spring a financial surprise on him/her at the very last possible moment. Along with the light wattage there's a host of other issues, not least the legal ones, which should've been sorted prior to any grow. And 12 plants needn't require much wattage. Do you drink more hot drinks? Play more vidya? You agreed to share the utility cost at the outset. You agreed right? It'd be fair if the crop was shared a little. But if you say nothing for months then you create a situation.

well to be honest we didn't agree on anything. We never really talked about it either way...i guess communication is key but we didn't agree to split it even or for him to pay more...we didn't really agree on anything...and we haven't paid a bill at all yet so it hasn't come up...

and he had a hydroponic setup...not sure if that requires a lot of electricity either...i've never grown weed i dont know much about it...

haha if anything he leaves the tv on 24/7 and uses more electricty than any of us WITHOUT the grow setup...so it really doens't even it self out...

yeah we waited till the last minute..what do you expect, we're stoners

anybody else got any input?
 
Well it depends on the size of your place, your climate, how much you pay for power by the wattage and whether you guys generally conserve power or leave stuff on all the time.

My first apartment was 1100 square feet with three room mates and our bill was generally around $100-150 depending on season. We didn't have air conditioning but didn't conserve energy worth shit.

Then my next apartment was about 750 sq ft which I lived in alone. I conserved electricity like none other and had no air conditioning and rarely used heat. My bill at most was about 40 bucks. So maybe my examples gives you some perspective.

The way you should handle the situation depends on whether you get any of the weed he grows. If he's not giving you any then he's taking advantage of you. Either way if you really want to figure it out find the amount of wattage you guys are using and either calculate that shit out or compare it to your neighbors bills or people you know that have similar size apartments and habits.
 
no its all his weed...we don't get any.

All I really want to know is if there's a way to calculate exactly the amount of energy from JUSt his lights. Is that not the most reasonable way to go about this? is it possible?
 
easiest solution, tell him you want some of the profit, or if he's not flipping it tell him you want some of the tree. free weed will heal your wallet too haha
 
it's really not the easiest solution because our power gets completely shut off tomorrow. I need money not weed.

I found out we use 667 kwh/month...not really sure where to go from this though? haha
 
so the power bill needs to be paid and you guys are short on cash and doctor green thumb isn't throwing down any extra? that just fucked up. and your gonna need to find out the wattage for his lights to if you really want to cut up your bill evenly.
 
(Lamp KW) x (Hours per day) x (Price per KWH in $) = Daily costs.

250 watts = an average of 0.3 KW
400 watts = an average of 0.5 KW
600 watts = an average of 0.7 KW
1000 watts = an average of 1.1 KW

Find out how many kw/s his whole set up uses, lights, water pumps, timers, whatever else he has, use the formula he posted above and tell him hes either gonna start paying that amount on top of his share, or he can sell his system and stop growing pot because your not paying his fucking bills lol
 
I'd make him pay the entire bill, seeing as your risking losing your house so he can grow pot. (nah I wouldn't really, but more than half definately)

& your telling me your a stoner who lives with a grower but doesn't get any of his goods?!
 
If he's growing pot he should pay the electric bill. Not part, all of it. You're in as much trouble as him if you get caught and aren't really getting shit out of it.

Haha it's alright guys he has his med card as do I. ( we live in Co). its alllllll legal :)

I don't know him that well, he got a room in our house at the last minute he kind of keeps to himself lol. He doesn't even smoke really, he's just in it for the money. And to be honest, the bud he grew isn't even that good I don't really care if he sells it all.

And I managed to figure this out today. I didn't really do any calculations, we just had him pay an extra 20 bucks every month so he ended up pitching 200 and the rest of us 120. We're all probably still pitching for HIS energy use but whatever atleast he throws down a bit more.

And he had a 440 watt light i think which means he was using quite a bit...
