Growing San Pedro From Seeds: Advice and Discussion

Why are you guys growing San Pedro from seeds and not buying cuttings or full cacti from a cactus grower? You'll have at least 3 to 5 years from the time you plant them before you harvest... In my experience just a little bit of looking will find you what you're looking for.

I started growing cacti from seeds just for the pleasure of growing them. I started them about seven years ago, and now I have about a dozen five foot cacti. They'd be even larger if I had planted them in the ground, but I've moved a bit over the past five years so it's not really practical.

The ironic thing is, even though now they are old enough to harvest, I'm not sure if I can bring myself to chop one of my cacti down to eat it!

For me, it has turned into a sort of life-long hobby.

Mainly as an experiment, and I enjoy growing plants I find it extremely satisfying. Also since I planted the seeds on my own I will get to raise them the whole way, and it's always a nice feeling to work hard at something which is truly yours. I know I could have just bought a cutting, but I'm not exactly in a huge rush.

im getting into growing my own san pedro and torch aswel, i know itll take years before i can harvest or do anything like that i have patience. i want to raise them the whole way as a little project i can do and will enjoy over the years, plus itll feel really nice raising them and knowing you grew them, i would also like to gain first hand experience with growing cacti. plus its totally legal and my father(whom i live with who is cool with psychedelics and my usage) wont care about me growing them in his house, he'd actually prefer me start a little garden with the LEGAL plants i could and would like to grow. i do have a san pedro guy that i can get cuttings from aswel and thats what ill to do if i want to dose soon.

i have known about legal cacti for years and if i would have just went through and started then i would be sitting on a decent amount of cacti right now.

So good ol' wikipedia is telling me "They are susceptible to fungal diseases if over-watered, but are not nearly as sensitive as many other cacti, especially in warm weather. They can be sunburned and display a yellowing chlorotic reaction to overexposure to sunlight. In warm areas it is best to keep them out of direct sun in mid-summer."

BOOM! I think i just found my problem! :)

Peace,
Dawg

Nice B). I'd be very interested to hear if they've improved over the next couple of weeks

They're growing steadily still very small though. The one is still a littler paler than the others but it also has a slightly different growth pattern. It will interesting to see whether these differences stick around or not. the odd one started growing with 3 spines instead of two, and was a little paler and smaller than the others.

SWIM recently procured 100+ San Pedro (Trichocereus Pachanoi) and has planted 5 seeds in a medium sized shallow clay pot. The soil used is conventional cactus mix, and SWIM has also covered the pot with plastic wrap to ensure humidity, although SWIM's current location is already quite humid year round. The cacti have sprouted and currently stand at about .5 cm in height. SWIM waters the plants daily and gives them natural sunlight. How long would SWIM have to wait for the cacti to become 'ripe' enough for one person to 'hold'? Any other advice and/or comments on growing cacti from seeds would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Hey,

Check my blog for instructions on how to grow trichocereus from seed,

Hey everybody! Hows it going?
So its been a couple months since i posted anything in here and let me tell you, things are going GREAT!
About 2 weeks i gave it some cactus/succulent food by Miracle Grow and its doing wonders right now.
Heres a few pictures so you all can see what im talking about.

First off I put it in a larger pot so the roots have more space to grow out.

Heres the side w/out any growth problems on it, looking very healthy.

And the bad side. Last time i posted a picture of this side it was slightly taller than where the white part ends about half way up. So in 2 months its grown about an inch :)
