cacti definitely shouldn't be grown like an intensive herb/veggie crop indoors (water/ferts/lighting). in most temperate zones (non-equatorial desert) the inside of your house will noticeably change temperature with the seasons. during the cool dark winter months, cacti basically go dormant and require very little light water or nutrients to live. then during the summer, direct and indirect light from a south-facing window (or north-facing, if you're down under) is plenty for the slow-growers. perhaps you could carry it outside for the summer months, but that would become more difficult as it grows in size.
